I will be reinstalling my head today as soon as the shop calls me telling me it is done. I have been doing a bit of reading the last couple months while I compiled everything I need. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips for me on making reinstall easier? Also, what about the timing, the #1 piston has to be at TDC and the dowel pins on the cams at 12 o' clock, correct?

Are you going to be running ARP head studs? If yes, it's a good idea to have a buddy help you lower the head down onto the studs. When I did my last head gasket I found it easier to bolt the intake manifold to the head before I put the head on. Also make sure both surfaces are as clean as you can possibly get them - brake cleaner works well. Make sure you torque the head bolts/studs in the proper sequence. I also used copper spray (personal preference) on the oem composite gasket and have had zero problems running up to 26psi on my 20g. You should also bleed down your lash adjusters before you install your camshafts.

Good luck, just take your time, be thorough and you'll be fine. Measure twice cut once :thumb:

There you go vfaq, one of the first things i bought was a manual for my car, its how i got started, best 20 bucks i spent, i still have it. That will help you along the way.

The head surface will be clean already because its coming back from the machine shop (they didn't call me saying its finished yet though). So brake cleaner to clean up the block surface. I have an oem composit HG and some copper spray to seal it, but I have no clue on how to use the spray as I never have, does it matter if you get it on the metal part in the combustion chamber?

I'm looking for stuff like my uncle said spray wd40 on the top ring and spray it off with compressed air to get and gunk off. My friend also said put a bit of oil on the cylinder walls to make sure its not going to be straight metal on metal. Things like that.

I don't want instructions, I want tips. The only instructions I don't have is coating the head gasket with the copper spray.

how I coated mine was I put a light coat on... let it sit for about 2 minutes then put a heavy coat on.... let it sit for about 5 min. then install....
