Rebuilding my motor

looks good man, i would stay away from the 50trim...even a 57trim turbo. a evo3 16g will put out
a way better power band then those 2 turbo's. if your going to run race gas OFTEN, then i would go
with a 60trim or bigger. if your looking to make 400hp on pump with ease, look into a gt30r or bigger
with all the support mods.

Yeah not exaclty sure what turbo I'm going to go with next. I just picked up a B16G so I'l probally just run that all summer and upgrade the turbo next winter.

well just a heads up i made 375hp on a 16g..not evo3...you can do alot with these little turbos.

Awesome job on the engine progress. I can't tell you how strongly i feel that it's important to do most of your own work. When you build your car and there is an issue with it, you will have a much better chance at figuring out how to fix it.

I almost put my car into the 11's with a big 16g turbo with some weight mods, so you really have to ask yourself, do you want to make fast 1/4 mile times or big HP on the dyno? The 16g won't put down the numbers quite the same as a big boy turbo, but does have what it takes to make a light 1g hit the traps in a hurry. Hell even my moded 14b put me to 12.4
I would say you have two things to consider and one has not been mentioned.

1) Transmission. 400hp and some hard driving will quickly make your drive line you weak link. I would have some fun with the 16g if you already have it and put your 50trim turbo money into getting your trans beefed up some so you don't have to see your car sit for another year.

2) Tuning is key. I see you have a pocketlogger...keep and eye on your knock count and try to find some way to monitor your EGT's. If your EGT's are spiking your are probably getting too lean, and lean will feel fast but will pop under too much heat. Your putting a lot of time and money into your engine, keep and eye on it and it should last a while. Check the oil frequently.

For the 16g, 550 injectors should work for you or maybe some EVO 560's

Those are a good choice, maybe even some 650s or above in the future. Great build, taking the head off mine, something went wrong.

Tranny should be fine. I have over 400awhp and tranny is still fine and great. Shifts well, no grinds, popping out etc. I personally would have gone w/an MLS over the composite, extra insurance.

Worked on the motor for alittle bit today. Installed the 3G lifters, rockers, and BC 272's.

Yeah I thought about it, but 1992awdlaser suggested that I use a composite head gasket so I went with that. This wont be a daily driver so it should hold what I throw at it for awhile.

Got the timing belt on, ported the oil relief valve and put the intake manifold on today.

One old picture I forgot to post.

Widen up the bottom area of the relief vave as much as you can.. I brought mine under that circle in the casting and all the way to the wall on the other side. I say this because i've ported housings bigger than yours and still got massive oil pressure... the new OFH is WIDE at the bottom, not so much taller or wider up top

Watch those timing belt tensioners. The green ones are made by GMB. Those are what are on my car... I have gone through 3 sets of them in the last year. The idler pulley on the right started to wobble and make noise. So, I replaced it. Just something for you to think about.

And don't forget to put your crank sprocket bolt on. One of my buddies built his 2.4L and forgot to tighten his. Needless to say he needed a new head after 5 mins of running the thing.

Looks good though... I'm helping Whophlungpoo with his build. Mahles & Eagles, 272's, SS valves, Springs & Retainers. We got most of the bottom end put together tonight. The rest will be done on Friday.

It's fun isn't it? Especially when it all comes together correctly.

Really? I bought this kit from one of the vendors on this site. He said they've had great success with this kit. He said all the parts are OEM quality.

Yeah its been fun, now its just getting to the point were I just wish it was done. So many things left to do, just chipping away at it slowly but sherly.

Yeah, I was second guessing myself on this one. I put it all back together and look at it again and thought I should of ported it more. I'l plan on taking it back apart and porting it more. Do you have any pictures of the OFH's that you've ported?

Has anybody else had problems with these?

Sorry, I just read your PM. The pulleys do still work but I have noticed that they do wear out prematurely. The one on the right, the "idler" pulley is the one we have had problems with. After a few thousand miles the play in the pulley is noticeable and it seems like the stock 150k mile one has less play than it. I could hear it at idle making a noise and determined it as the cause of the noise. Once I start to hear the noise I replace it. I have yet to let one completely fail yet. But I just wanted to give you a heads up on what to expect. The nice thing about them is these came in the Gates timing belt kit and are a lifetime replacement warranty through O'Reilly's. When one fails I get a whole new timing belt kit! :thumb:

So its just the idler pulley that you've had problems with? What did you end up going with then for a new pulley? OEM?

Yes, the idler pulley the one that just gets bolted up and has no adjustment provision.

No, I just keep a good eye on it and listen for any noises coming from that area and replace it when I detect play in the pulley. Take it into O'Reilly and have them warranty it out with another of the same one. Haven't had a problem with the current one for about 5000 miles. This one may last??

Interesting, maybe I'l just leave it and cross my fingers that I dont have a problem. I cant take it in for warrenty as I did all the work and I bought it from one of the vendors on this site. I guess I'l run it and hope for the best.

Well finally brought the motor home today. This weekend is going to be spent cleaning the rest of the parts and engine bay, and bolting the rest of the stuff on the motor. Should be dropping this back into the car next weekend.
