420A Rear Motor/transmission mount

Hey everyone,

So from a previous thread I posted how my transmission cable retaining clip kept popping off and I couldn’t figure out why.

A previous member recommended for me to add a washer to the cable bracket as the rubber washers on the bracket can get compressed and cause the bracket to not fully torque. Well when I started working on the car I found the issue, the rear motor/transmission mount wasn’t even bolted in, the bracket had broken off where the bolt holes are.

I have a 98 eclipse and got a replacement bracket from a 1996 eclipse but when I attempted to install the mount I can’t get the bolt next to the speed sensor to line up, it’s always a half an inch off.

Any suggestions how to get this mount on? I tried for 2 hours and I can’t get it to line up perfectly and I don’t want to leave a bolt out

Typically, you'll find some numbers stamped on the bracket. I am not as familiar with n/t versions, but there may be a difference between auto/manual brackets. The stampings would have a different series of numbers. If the numbers are the same, try remounting the bracket keeping all bolts loose to get the bracket lined up a little easier.

Alternatively, if the bracket is IDENTICAL to the old bracket with the ONLY exception being the one mounting hole, I would be inclined to adjust the hole enough to run a bolt through. Just ensure they are torqued to spec.

Edit: One more thought. If you have the old bracket, still see how the bracket lines up to the bolt holes. Being that the bracket failed, it may have also been the wrong bracket.

Agreed with above. Or if you want to go further with it, slot that hole like said so the bolt slides through, put a fat washer between the mount and bottom of the bolt head, and then weld the washer to the mount. So then your bolt is in a hole as intended rather than a slot.

If those two parts are identical the round rubber mount bracket is 180 degrees out from the one with the broken holes. One or the other is incorrect I would guess.

They are identical I accidentally put the rubber mount backwards when taking the mock-up pic.

I also saw another mount for sale for a 420a nt and it looks identical.


All the bolts line up except the one closest to the speed sensor it’s so close to getting in but just a bit off.

Take a stepped drill bit or dremel or what ever you have, remove a little metal and you should be good to go.

thanks for that information I can see the big difference in that bolt hole. If I dremel
It out to fit I should still be alright just using a large washer to make sure it presses down on the mount?

Given that the previous mount broke there, I would be hesitant to use a different one that has previously broken and been welded back together.

If you go that route, yes, a fender washer is a good idea. But make sure that the welds are ground down to flat so the washer can sit flat on the bracket.

I would also check the other mounts. Why did the mount you have break? Given you found another one and it's broken maybe this is a common item on NT cars. I am not familiar. Of possibly the result of a collision?

Interesting that they took the whole bracket off. I usually just pull the center bolt from the bushing.
