that is correct, except the last layer. The lay up resin "dries" to be tacky to the touch. To get rid of the tacky feeling, you can add wax or pva to the last batch of resin, and when that dries, it hardens to a smooth "sandable" final layer. I don't think sanding the backside will be much use, but it just gives it a smooth finish compared to the tacky to the touch.

As I understand it, some resins have wax in them already and dry smooth, but the Vinyl Ester needs it. This is coming from the sales rep at US composites.

Is it your opinion that is completely bogus? I only know what you, the sale rep, and some research has told me; nothing from experience. I used the cheap crap from home depot to make the plugs.

Aircraft Spruce pushed the back order out again til mid feb for the high temp resin, my local supplier cant do anything for me with resins, and will only be able to supply me with the basic cloths.

So, I just bit the bullet and spent the (now) 180 dollars in shipping. If I make any more in the future I will look into ways to save money then, but from the month I've spent in free time looking, it is what it is..

Ordering for materials is complete, eta 1-2 weeks to my door.

Now I get to spend time looking for a metal fabricator for the strakes...

fun fun!

I got the fiberglass shipment in for rear diffusers. Between car, computer, adventures, job, and other random things requiring my attention (like taxes and getting my damn w-2s... effing GA), I been pretty busy this month so far.

Still havn't found a solution for strakes production yet. There was a local shop I tried, but unless I wanted 100 made they didn't even want to talk to me. I'm all ears if someone knows someone (or a company) that would do quality work for a decent price at the lesser quantities I need.

I'd like the rear bumper carbon bumper cover if anyone still has one I'd pay on the spot for it!

Sorry AngelOfPassion, I missed the thread getting bumped. I need to get with the guy who helped proto type the first set as he had a cad file that I could just send in to have CNC cut from. Been more worried about getting the panel made. Weather has been nicer though finally so hopefully I can finish soon.

no garage ftl..

It's ok I was just curious haha

Ok here is a cool update:

I just moved into a house with a garage, and have a friend who wants to help make them. I am giving an ET of 2-3 weeks before the first ones are finished!

:rocks:

Scratch that ^, first mold will be done this weekend. :D

Also in good news, have a potential local strake producer!

Lame excuse for delay: Landlord was suppose to move this Mustang out along with a bunch of crap in the garage. They been coming on the weekends and removing stuff but have been pretty intrusive, and then since they are friends with my roommates, it turns into a social event. Wonderful people, just got junk in my playroom :)

I got the PVA gun setup for the subframe panel tomorrow, and the diffuser panel has been razer blade edged along the strake indentations. I have space setup now and I'll be getting down this weekend.

If the mold is not done this weekend, Hell is freezing over. Or maybe its burning over.. since I didn't make my original December predicition... :coy:

Sweet bro. I'm pretty sure I know what I want put on there now so I should be prepared when you ask.

What is the finish going to look like on these? I can't remember if you have said already. I think I only was able to order the non carbon fiber one will it just be black with a clear like coat over it?

I'm really looking forward to this! I'd be interested in a little more aggressive style, since I cut out my spare tire well. keep us posted! keep up the good work.

Thanks for the support guys. Just got back inside after having the panel waxed down some more. Realized there was an area that needed to be re-fiberglassed, so we did that and now it is drying. In the morning we'll re-sand and wax the small corner and then hopefully get a few layers of the mold done.

I am super excited, and I am glad you guys are still excited with me. I'll post update tomorrow! (err.. later today..)

Well one day delay.. my "crap" fiberglass from HD has turned into complete crap, I thought (and assumed) it had, and tested it on the corner, and well.. it took all of today to dry. I lost a day, but I'll keep on trucking forward!

I am using a dye to turn the fiberglass gelcoat black, so that if you choose to primer it black and paint it black (as I'd assume you want a black finish) it will not have a white gel coat trying to bleed through.

Just got the race car up and running finally, hoping to be out on track within a month, hopefully I'll be able to test the diffuser by then

That is looking to be a safe bet. The resin finally dried this evening, so I went and rebondoed where I needed. A quick sand and wax in the morning and I'll be back on track. Saw your pics of getting binkie out in the sun; can't wait to see my diffuser on it!

Alright time to post some pictures! I'll be pulling the plug from the mold tonight, and start making my first piece in a few days. Had to buy a few more things and create a paint booth, but I think things are coming along. Once I pull a subframe panel from the mold, I'll double check measurements on the diffuser panel and then within the week finish a mold for it.

Big thanks to my roommate for helping me out! :thumb:

Note worthy accomplishments:

We set up a paint booth of sorts in the garage, just to help keep stuff from flying all around. Nothing air tight, as it didn't need to be, but just for protection for his (and the land lords) property.

We made a stand for the panel so it would be easier to fiberglass and work with.

The higher quality resin and fiberglass has made doing fiberglass work so much more barable. Everything has gone along smoothly! I been busy with life (see my evo in some of those pictures and I bought a house, escrow closing on the house and 3 car garage in a few weeks) But I am keeping this project on the forefront of my mind.

Ill post updates when I can!
