Well, plan on trying to see if I can get the code off the tech article with a digital volage meter but just to late right now.

When the car is at idle the CEL light comes on but it will go off once you climb in the RPM's. You can have it in 1st or rev in Neutral but either way the CEL light goes off. Once the idle comes back down it pops back on.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Michelle

You will have fits with a digatal volt meter, find someone with a old pointer unit.

Well I have the old pointer unit as well just at the shop so I can do it either way.

Michelle

What is the rpm range of your idle? Is it warmed up? Does it happen before or after your drive it? Is it every single time it idles?

Well right now the idle when first started for the first few sec. is around 1k then is gets bad. It begins to bounce between 1100rpm to as low as 600rpm just up and down.

But the cell light problem always happens. It starts from the second the cars turned on and always happens wether parked or driving but the CEL light only comes on when it's at idle and goes away when on the throttle.

Thanks,
Michelle

The bouncing up and down is called idle surge. It can be one of the most frustrating things to diagnose and repair.

That could be as simple as a badly adjusted TPS but until you pull the code it will be hard to guess.

Appreciate the help.

I plan to go through the vaccum lines tomorrow and see if I can find something there and then try to get the code pulled as well.

I figured it was the idle surge. I have been research as much as possible on here and on vfaq's so I have a list of things to check/clean/go over tomorrow :)

Thanks!
Michelle

It would make it easier for us to help if you could also fill out your vehicle profile when you get a chance.
Go to Auto zone or somewhere, where they can check which code is being spit out if you cannot figure it out on your own. That will help narrow it down. DAN

I don't know if it's standard practice, but around my area, autozone won't do a 1G. First off it's OBD-I and the guys here told me you need a "special key" for the dsms. Good luck with that idle surge, it can be stubborn. I try to live with mine. Just tell em it's your cams :p

In general I don't think Autozone does OBD1.

$5 and a trip to Radio Shack and you can read your anytime you like. A 12v piezo buzzer is great but not something you want to leave hooked up all the time or you can use a big LED and series resistor for 12v and have it always connected (If you don't have a datalogger).

Steve

Well the car has a datalogger on it from MMCD but the PDA that came with it is all screwed up so I can't take advantage of using that until I get another PDA for it.

Thanks,
Michelle

Well the PDA is a Palm M105.

It works fine upon first restart but after a few minutes of use the screen unaligns is the best way I know how to say it. The home button doesn't work and most buttons that are on the left side of the screen can't be tapped on.

Once you remove the batteries for a min. and start over it all works again but the same problem happens again. I went into the PDA and set up the physical buttons at the bottom of the PDA to be able to take me to the applications/home screen but once your in the MMCD program those buttons become part of the program and won't take me to the home page.

Other than that the PDA works fine, I did get it to read info from the car but then the screen kept on messing up so I couldn't ever get out of the program or get the info off the PDA onto the PC.

Michelle

Yeah, so I will just find another PDA for it.

I also noticed that I seem to be missing the fuel pressure control solenoid. I was looking through the vfaqs site and was looking at the boost gauge install page. They said best place to tap in is off there but I seem to be missing it.

I have the electrical connection but the rest I am missing in the red circle.

Also, here are some extra connectors I found loose as well.

I assume this one is the timing adjustment plug that you would ground?

The plug end behind the batt is the ground location for timing. The other one im not sure. I do not have one like that.

Oh ok, I am sure I can figure out what the other plug is or someone else will chime in.

I did find out that I am throwing a code 14 for the TPS. So I will do some tests on it tomorrow and see if it needs to be replaced or adjusted.

Thanks,

Michelle

In the pic, what is this connection? Mine is missing this as well.

That is the TPS that may explain your idle issues that should be plugged in. The plugin that goes to it is usually crusty and brittle and falls off if its like mine. It should be in the vicinity of the throttle body it is just one wire with the plug end on it I believe.

I believe the TPS is a 3pin (maybe 4) connector on the side of the throttle body and the ISC motor is below the throttle body so I am not sure what that connection is. I have the single connection but no sensor to plug into.

That is the 1G Idle Position Switch (IPS). It tells the ECU when the throttle is closed so that it knows to turn off the fuel if you decellerating, manage the idle speed, etc. There is a single green wire that runs to the connector on top. The TPS is on the other side the throttle body from the green spring and throttel pulley. You can just see the Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor and it's connector under the IPS in that picture.

Steve

Thanks! Maybe after replacing that plus checking the specs on some other parts the idle surge can be gone.

Happen to know where to get the IPS? I can't locate one at any of the auto parts stores here locally.

Thanks,
Michelle
