Well I'll be putting back my engine in the bay this week-end and I have some questions. Now that I have no power steering and the brackets to hold it is gone and now I have one less place to hold the engine. I also don't have anymore the little hook near the throttle and VC. So these two place I used to removed the engine are now gone ...

I was thinking about fabbing some new brackets to put it back in but I'm curious to know how have you can do it without those bracket. I've seen a guys in the build thread who used a sling around the intake and exhaust manifold but he was putting only the engine without the tranny ...

I also removed the engine and tranny at the same time and I also want to put them back at the same time so maybe I can hook on side of my chain on the tranny ?

Waiting for your advice. :D

My build thread

Well you should have a engine lifting plate near the powersteering pump/attaches to one or so of the exhaust studs.... Then you should have that one near the intake, well i think you said you stook these off? Well When i lifted my motors/ tranny in the car i used a balancer bar/engine stabilizer. Then i put on chain on the exhaust holder, one chain on the intake holder bracket...Lifted the motor with a little bit extra help tiling it and such with some ratchet straps. Got the motor on the mounts, took off the engine bracket on the manifold, then left the intake one there, just painted it a nice black. But without any of those brackets....You might have to use some straps....lift the motor with 2 decent points, and then put a ratchet strap around your tranny, then slowlly let the ratchet strap out for that decent sized "tilt" you need. I dont know if the intake manifold is the best spot to be putting a ton of weight pulling up.

Well no I just said that I saw that in a build thread and I also don't want to lift the engine strapping the manifold ...

I think I will just fab up some bracket and use a ratchet sling or hook to lift the tranny when the assembly will be in place !

I hope everything will be fine since I got too many hours on this thing ... :)

That's exactly what I wanted to do ! :) Put them back in one assembly.
Sorry, I completely missed that part in your first post. :coy: :)

I typically attach my chain at the upper, left-side intake manifold stud and the other end goes to the P/S bracket. But being that you no longer have power steering, it might not be a bad idea to fab up a bracket system to use.

I just use straps to go all the way around the engine. I basically cradle it. I do this with just the engine though. I can imagine you could do the same, but just have 4 straps. Two to go around the engine and two to go around the transmission. I can not see a major problem doing it this way, although I have never done it that way. Just leave all the pulleys off of it when you are dropping it in! Good luck!

Yep that's what I was thinking since I also removed the little hook near the intake manifold and throttle ... The 2 places I used to removed the engine are now gone ... My bad for wanting a clean engine bay now I have to fab up some brackets to old my chain ... That's gonna be a fun week-end :thumb:

I also tought about putting the chain on the tranny since I'm dropping it in the same time ... Will see

And why remove the pulley to drop it back in ? I pulled it out without removing them ... I was thinking about putting my jmf race smim after but not the pulley ...

I believe he may be talking about the water pump, ac, and power steering pulleys. But I could be wrong. I can see sometimes with the crank pulley gone gives that little bit extra room to move the engine, with is key for the 2g! I wish the engineers gave us at least one more inch on the drivers side.

taking off the crank pulley is because you have to drop it at such and angle, if the tranny is too far to the passenger side then the motor wont set right, when you drop the motor on that angle, that crank pulley really gets in the way, i always manage to just make it squeeze tho somehow... and dropping motor with tranny is the best way, the first time i put the motor back in, i then had my tranny resting against the motor seperately, tranny was on a jack too to help me, went to have a smoke, and it fell off, bell housing broke the fall :(. GL. Btw..whats the reason for no power steering??! You gong for a clean bay?? Check out that taboo speed shop vac Delete too, its wonderful.

Maybe this sounds a bit foolish of my to suggest, but why not put the brackets and hook back on just for putting the engine in, and than taking them off?

There is the one for the exhaust manifold (which there is no RTV there so you could easily take it off if you put it on there already)

There is the hook on the intake manifold (which that can be attached as well on the outside of the intake mani, right?)

and you could always put a bolt through a chain loop on a motor mount, i do that to help angle the engine the way I want it.

Here's an idea: Put the engine, transmission, transfer case, subframe, etc together on a heavy duty workbench with wheels, raise the car, roll the bench under the car, and lower the car down onto the engine assembly. Apply bolts, raise car, remove workbench.

That's how I always do it, works great for me.

Want something complicated? How do I pull the inline eight engine out of my '51 Buick? Now there's a challenge. There aren't even two decent bolt holes in the block.

You will regret taking the power steering off.. I did it and yeah it cleans up the bay but it sucks because how heavy our cars are... Nothing like a civic hatch

I always use a chain so there are innumerable places for extra straps/rope to get the correct tilt.

The main attachment points I use are:

1. Dr side motor mount bracket where the 2 studs stick up. I slip a chain link over the stud and secure it with a washer & nut.
2. Pass side tranny mount bracket. There is a piece going across the mount that fits a hook perfectly.

I also use a strap going from the chain to the back motor mount bracket to keep the motor from rotating.

All the areas I use are motor mounts, so they will hold the weight fine.
