Putting axles back in

I have done some searching on here and have heard it is hard to get the axles back in. Probably a dumb question, but do the axles just slide in? Is there any key on the splines etc or can I just put em in there any old way.

I am finishing up my clutch install and I am at this part now.

I'd rather figure this out now than mess the axles up. Also, should I put grease on the splines?

Anti seize or grease works great on the splines. They slip right in. No big deal there.

Just slide them in and give them a hard push. You want to make sure that the clips "click" into place. Sometimes they can be a pain, if that is the case a block of wood and a tap with a hammer should do the trick. Just make sure you don't damage the boot, try to position the wood on the edge of the metal part that goes into the tranny. Some anti-seize on the splines that go though the hub is a good idea.

A light dab of marine grease ok? This is what I have at my disposal. While I was waiting the 3 seconds for you all to answer me, I tried to put the passenger side axle in and it moved forward super easy but no affirmative click. I will make sure that I hear clicks before assuming I am ok.

You won't actually hear a click. Its more of a feel. You will know they are in good when you cannot easily slide them back out.

Alright, I guess once they are as much of a pain to take out as they were to put in I got it just right.

Thanks for your time. Marine Grease seems ok to use based on what I have seen in some searches so I'll just try that.

Yeah they go in no problem and "click" in place. The "click" referring to when the ring on the axel goes into the groove..if that makes sense. It helps lock it in place. If its not going in easy, you have the splines mis aligned.

I just gave it a push and had no issues whatsoever. I tried to pull it back out and it won't come out. Guess I got lucky...didn't have to add anything to the spline.
