i just got an 05 PT Cruiser 2.4L Turbo aluminum valve cover today.

I have looked and looked on DSMTuners and Neon forums looking for more info and more insight on using a 01+ turbo or just 2.4 in general PT Cruiser valve cover on 420a engines of the Mitsubishi/Dodge/Chrysler variety. I specify 01+ because any cover less than 01 is a direct bolt on according to forums. However 01+ is apparently bolt on but all you need to do is plug 1-2 holes on the cover itself because those holes wont be used and additionally there is a 9th bolt hole (one of the 2 holes that need to be plugged). That is my main concern and im wondering if the gasket going around that area would still seal properly to the head of my 420a.

I know for one of the middle holes i can drill and tap the head itself to use the hole but my main concern is still that right-most middle hole. According to the Neon forums the 01+ covers will bolt on to a DOHC 420a engine, so therefore it should work on an Eclipse as well.

And a post on here says the SRT 4/PT covers won't work, so I'm not sure whats true or not.

I have seen a couple 420a people using a 2.4L valve cover, one being a youtube vid where the guy used a pre 01 Dodge Avenger 2.4 cover. But I have NEVER seen photos of an 01+ SRT 4 or PT Cruiser cover being used despite people saying they can possibly work.

So what I'm asking is for anyone with experience in this to give their insight or info. All I'm wanting is a good metal valve cover upgrade for my car. Any info or photos is appreciated.

Did you ever sort this out?

I use a '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4L valve cover on a 420A. It bolts up directly, only modification is replumbing the PCV line.

The general consensus is that the Neon SRT4 2.4L valve cover cannot be used due to the bolt holes not lining up. The PT GT valve cover is the same, so I'd assume the result is the same.

If you need to modify both the valve cover and the cylinder head, is it really worth using that valve cover?

Also not sure what you mean by "metal upgrade", since the stock 420A valve cover is cast aluminum, same as all the 2.4L valve covers. I'm not aware of any plastic valve cover that will bolt up to the 420A. Those weren't in production until the 420A and similar engines were phased out completely.

I have a 420A valve cover on my Neon 2.0 DOHC, which is the same head as 95-01 2.4L. I also have a nice powder coated 2.4L valve cover for 95-01 2.4L that I gave to my friend who was SRT-4 swapping his Neon, and he gave it back because it does not fit. Ergo - the later valve cover won’t fit your 420A head.

No, i havent attempted it. According to others it will not work. If i get to the point one day where im finally boosting my 420a then i will try and make the SRT/PT vc work somehow cause i think itd be really cool especially since no one else has done it to my knowledge. I would like to be the first, but thats years away from now. I imagine there might be some drilling, tapping and possibly even welding to make it work.

Oh hey i think youre the person i saw on youtube haha your vid helped me, so thanks. Also your car is awesome. I got a old plymouth breeze vc in my car now. But yeah i somewhat figured it couldnt be done but wasnt too certain, especially since at that time i wasnt going to take my vc off to test the fitment. I do eventually want to tackle this one day when/if i get to the point where im boosting the engine cause i think itd be awesome and different. I like how it looks too. But hm.. i guess i was mistaken, for some reason i thought the 420a vc were plastic haha it didnt seem like metal to me. It didnt look or feel like metal either, if that doesnt sound weird. But im glad to find out that it is indeed metal, so thanks for clearing that up.

Gotcha, well thats unfortunate. I might tackle this one day. Thanks for the info.
