I need help with my build!!!! Jeff when I get all the parts together you should introduce me to Tom. Im a newbie at putting an engine together so the more knowledgable people the better.

Great thread :thumb:

Yea, Tom's good people. If you hook up with him for that engine build, let me know. I wanna get some experience under my belt as well. I'd like to build a fresh motor for next season myself.

Tom, you'll easily be running 11.5 with that setup and a good pass. You have to teach me the ways of NLTS so when I come back to the track with my new FMIC setup, ceramic coated exhaust components, and coil-over setup, I can break into the 11's finally.

Well, good luck. I'll probably be pming you soon, I plan on trying to get the block out of my car friday morning...then I have to wait for a little bit because a friend of mine has to take my motor mount to get modified. While that's being done I plan on putting my 7bolt head on the 6bolt block...I hope this all goes smoothly but like I said, I'll probably be pming you so keep your eyes open haha

Hows the exhaust/downpipe working out?

What do you think of the 280's compared to 272's?

Didn't I just inquire about your DP? I wish I had bought it, but money got tight too fast too soon :coy: I love the 280's compared to my FP2s. The pull is nice a clean up top, idle sounds aggressive as hell, but i lost about 300 rpm to spooltime. No biggie.

Hi,

What up man? Glad its coming along well, I'm sure you will have all the bugs worked out in no time. When I come home for a week before I start that new job we will have to goto the track.

Looking forward to the videos and logs.

Bill

Bill, like I said through text, CONGRATS!!! I'm jealous that you're out doing something that us car guys love! I'll definitely post up new videos soon. I have some stuff out to weld and am waiting on a new snap ring from forge for my BOV, so it'll be another week before I fire her up.

Did you rewire your clutch setup? it's literally 3 wires and comes with the dsmlink box. That and you set your RPM setting. Once you get NLTS programmed, it's basically shifting without lifting off the throttle. Shifts like a dream, but your trans will hate you for it :rocks:

I'll probably be pming you so keep your eyes open haha

Sure thing, let me know :thumb:

What is your final choice of oil/filter too?

I finally have 1093 miles on the engine and recently switched to mobile syn 5w30 + a napa gold (same as wix) filter.

Thanks guys, the car has gone a long way. I've recently run into a big bump in the road with my snow performance meth kit, so I haven't been able to do much. I'll be reporting back with an install walkthrough for the meth kit and some other goodies I've done along the way. Sooner or later I'm going to convert this to a tech article. :thumb:

Not to sure if I posted up, but I ran the car a couple of weeks ago at Island Dragway. This was with zero traction through first, crap tune, and no NLTS.

12.1@117
12.1@117
12.2@116

So I'd say she's being pretty consistent :thumb:

this helps me as also with the above peeps, im rebuilding my 99 long block, post like this help us out so much.

Thouse are great times and i agree thouse times are consistent :thumb:

And you'll be running 11's with that meth kit. Get your ass to the track in a few weeks and we'll see who can hit 11.5 first!

PS - I'm gonna get that clutch switch! NLTS!

Tom, happened to come across this post in my bookmarks today. This will come in real handy when I start putting together the new motor. Expect tons of calls from me this winter! :thumb:

yup, just give me a call man :thumb:

I keep forgetting about this thread, I really should get around to converting it to a tech article one of these days. I've been good bill, you? How's those crazy BW turbos you've been messing around with? I'm still jealous of your job! When are you coming up so I can give you a ride?

I went to island dragway last friday and had some horrible luck with NLTS. It was KICKING MY ASS. After I realized my error (bigT helped me out with a new set of spark plugs too), I quickly gained back some momentum.

13.09@110
14.00@96
14.05@106
*turned OFF NLTS*
12.76@116
12.96@114
12.18@116
12.03@118

This was all done at the same boost level of ~23.5psi and an awesome 20* of peak timing on 93/meth :rocks: Sadly, 11's still elude me. I hope to go to the track again sometime in July to try and finally get there. I'm really optimistic, considering that I want to go back at around 28psi and hopefully the same amount of timing.

here she is at island with turbotaloon next to her:

Tom, don't worry about the plugs. I'm always here to help. We are both so close to 11's its not even funny. Let me know next time you want to go out. Hopefully we both get some more bugs worked out and finally make some decent passes.

Great thread, and man, i feel you guy's pain...11's have eluded me for years...best of 12.08 @ 117 MPH LOL LOL LOL Hopefully the fever spread across the US if any of us ever catch it...the 11 second fever for those who aren't oo quick on the uptake LOL LOL LOL

Tom, why don't you lean it out to about 11.0:1 to make a little more power? Right now it is like factory air/fuel numbers. If you do that and it doesn't knock you should be in the 11's.

Thanks T, I definitely want to go very soon. I need to work out my boost issue (wasn't holding above 24 that night) and tune her a little better. We'll get there man!

I've tried and the car does not like leaner than ~10.7ish, so I tuned it to be a bit richer. With further research over on the link forums, posts have indicated that gasoline afr's are quite different than gas/meth afr's. I'm not sure if you're familiar, but it surprised me. Supposedly 11:1 on the gasoline afr is a lot leaner if you're really injecting methanol. That would explain a lot if I was knocking at 11:1 like I was before and zero timing was added. Another tip I have yet to try is to convert my UEGO to lambda value, since that is the true value we should be tuning to. opinions?

yes yes, this 11's chase is killing me! I only went twice this year, but both times have been a huge disappointment, especially since I built this motor to be an 11.5s pump car. Well, then again, it's really the driver mod that is killing me :p

What was the problem with the NLTS?

I don't quite know yet. I suspect the purple/orange NLTS wire may have been wired into the wrong cruise wire, but it works fine 90% of the time. My problem is that I rest my foot on my clutch when I race (preempt to shifting, I suppose) and I mistakenly activate it all the time. I can't help it, so I just turned NLTS off.

I do the exact same thing, I wish the trigger on the clutch pedal worked by the clutch hitting the floor, not just anytime it moves from "free rest" for lack of a better word. Sometimes i'll use NLTS and then i don't take my foot off the pedal all the way and it just kills my run, that's why i haven't used it on the strip yet, only when practicing shifts with it ( i keep trying to get fast enough to let off just right, but 1 out of every 3 times it messes me up more than it helps)

There are 2 switches on the clutch pedal. One on the bottom would require a relay, but you will have a hard time trying to launch because as soon as you come off of the floor, the launch control deactivates and your rpms shoot to the limiter. Makes for some smokey burn outs ROFL but not so nice for launching. The best way is to wire in a separate momentary swith in the line that you just hold down when you want to use it. If you got creative enough, you could probably run one on the shifter for when it is in first gear only. Obviously this is for launch control, but you could try something like that for NLTS too. Or try to use the bottom switch (if you have separate inputs for launch control and NLTS)

Ooh, where's this bottom switch ona 2g? I'm on it, i can configure a number of inputs and outputs to work with any type of switch on my ECU really, so the sooner i can find this the sooner i will have something new to experiment with :D

Hmm, well that is weird. I just checked the 2g outside and it doesn't have 2. My 1g had 2 switches on the clutch pedal. I forget what one of them is for but there are 2 on a 1g. Sorry for assuming :(

blcknspo0ln, when is the last time you updated your software?

I bought DSMLink in 09/2006. I wonder if there was an update since then, I'll check it out.

I was going to say, I don't really remember there being 2 switches
