This will be my build journal for all your viewing pleasures. I'll start off with some history of my past builds and the journey to where I am today. Then I have tons of progress pictures and stories to add.

I'd like to state my original goal has always been and is still, to have a 10 second 'Street' car. I've always said, high 10's are still 10's so I'll take it! :p I never want my car to turn into one of them many caged, stripped, just no longer fun except at a drag strip type of project. So anyway, on to the story:

Early 2005: Well it all started when I was 16. I got my very fist almost DSM :p. It was a N/A 95 grey Eagle Talon 5 speed with manual windows, no moon roof, cloth seats and missing the headliner. I paid $2000 for it and I didn't even know how to drive a stick. I didn't have the car long so I have no pictures of it.

Late 2005: Me still being very young and not even apart of this site yet, I traded my grey Talon to a friend of mine for his 97 Eclipse GS. I was stoked about this car. It was white, had power everything, moon roof, alarm installed, lowered on some cheap coilovers, headers, exhaust, AEM V2 intake and an immobilizer chip. This car had the clearest headlights I have ever seen even to date on a DSM. I drove this car for a while until it would constantly pop out of third gear and eventually wouldn't stay in at all.

Late 2006: After some research and reading online I decided I wanted a turbo model. So I sell my 97 Eclipse GS to a friend of mine. After tons of searching I find a car lot that has a 1998 Eclipse GS-T on Craigslist. I get on the phone and after some negotiation I'm getting the car for $2k. Now you may be thinking this was a good deal? Wrong! The car was very clean and had less than 100k miles on it but the motor was blown:(. My cousin takes me to Cincinnati and we trailer the car back. Over the next several months my friend (the guy I got the white car from) and I proceed to try and rebuild the motor. The following pictures are during the process.

The day I got it:

A buddy who had no clue what he was doing convinced me we could remove the motor ourselves so we started taking stuff offOMG.

After giving up on being able to do it myself, we take it out to Nicks house and I buy parts over a long period of time. Here is the culmination of them all. REMEMBER, this was when I really didn't know much about cars in general. Yes I bought most of my stuff off of EBay. The parts I bought were:
-ITM Timing componets & water pump.
-Topline oil pump.
-NPR pistons and rings
-ACL duraglide bearings
-ITM Headgasket.
-XTD Stage 3 pucked clutch kit.
-Some kind of gasket kit also.

Yeah, that motor lasted about 700 miles. I'm sure with the cheap parts it was destined to fail but not so prematurely. I actually bought a Big16g and started upgrading the car. I drove it around on 20lbs hitting fuel cut everytime not realizing what I was doing. I ended up spinning a bearing and blamed it on crankwalk:rolleyes:. Ahhh to be young and dumb..........

Anyway here are some pictures of the things we did.
-Real big16g.
-SSAC FMIC
-1G Crushed BOV.
-Injen intake.
-Poly motor mounts.
-Skunk2 Cam gears.
Had a massive oil leak so the timing belt needed changed. I grabbed a GReddy kevlar. Hey I did some stuff right as I gained knowledge:).

Here is a video that I am not so proud of. Driving around hitting fuel cut at 20lbs:(. I may as well just get it out there.
th_0318081924.jpg

2008:
Anyway after I was knocking, by now I had gained enough knowledge to pull the motor on my own. So in my driveway, by myself that is exactly what I did.
img290.jpg

000_0003.jpg

000_0005.jpg

Late 2008:
Since I read one or two pages online about crankwalk , oh I just knew I had it. I opted for a 6 bolt swap. I eventually found a full 1g donor car for about $300. Had a rebuilt motor in it the guy told me. The car actually ran and was in the process of a Talon conversion. The guy said it only needed brakes which it had none LOL. So my cousin and I are off to Michigan. The car checks out, we drive it up on a trailer and are on our way.
1025081624.jpg

By this time I have a decent grasp on the whole car thing. Honestly it was just from hanging out with my cousin, a few friends and a lot of reading on these forums. Thanks Dsmtalk.com!! Anyway, aside from cutting the axles on the donor car with a torch to get the motor out, I did the whole 6 bolt swap by myself with a print off of the Magnus write up. Here are the progress pictures.

1102081523.jpg

Dropped it in alone with the poly mounts .

1114082104.jpg

I got the car running and even added a B&M external oil cooler. I drove the car like this for a while and loved it aside from the pucked clutch and Fidanza 8lb flywheel. Now I was on a 14b and was careful not to over boost.

Early 2009:

I had forgot to mention above that I had actually introduced my uncle in California to the DSM scene. He calls me one day and says he bought one, a GSX at that:mad:. Yeah I was jealous but happy for him.

Anyway, fast forward, he put a lot of money into the car from blowing the head gasket to small upgrades and he wanted to sell it to me. Figured I would take care of her. Only catch is it was not running at the moment. Of coarse I jumped on this opportunity! He sold the car to me cheap and on payments! So I grab a plane ticket and fly out to California for a small vactation and to get the car running (turned out the car would not start because the starter ground was disconnected:p). I'm living it up here and have the car trailered back to Ohio where it is winter time and snowy. It goes into the garage until I get home.

I now own 2 perfectly running DSM's?! WOOT the tables have turned for the better!

0519090718a.jpg

First thing I did was get rid of the halo headlights.

Late 2009:
Ok so it started getting cold, I had moved to a place with a garage and I had decided to never ever ever ever drive my GSX which is a California car, in the salty, rust forming snow of Ohio. I had the GS-T and my DD car. I found a guy at work who wanted back into the DSM scene and I ended up selling him my GS-T. Here is the car the day I sold it, like 10 minutes before he came and drove her away. It was kind of a different feeling selling it. I had so much work and time into her.

I'll add more if there is any interest, night tuners!

me being 17 now and 16 when i got my first car (96 na eclipse) i find this story to be truly inspirational. always wanted a 4g63, since 3 yrs ago when i first started liking cars and stuff. major thumbs up and cudos to you!!

Hey thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is truly just the beginning. I've got tons to add. Onto the next piece:

GSX Beginnings 2010:
As I stated in an earlier post, the car has not and will never see salty roads from our Ohio winters. So the car sits in a garage all winter long. The day I got the car it had the following done to it:

-A custom fit smaller FMIC.
-Greddy Type S blow off valve.
-No name muffler tip.
-Off brand tubular Ex manifold.
-Slotted/drilled rotors all around.
-Injen intake.
-Autometer boost , light show air fuel and ridiculous tach.
-Halo headlights.

P1000109.jpg

The subwoofers didn’t go with the car but I was fine with that.

The first couple of mods I did to the car included:
-Aeromotive AFPR.
-Walbro 255lph Fuel pump.
-Custom Vband SS 3” exhaust straight back to an Apexi muffler.
-ECMlink V3.
-Aem Truboost and AEM Wideband gauges.
-Tokico Illuminas with Eibach springs.
-Ingalls camber kit front and back.

The passenger strut tower didn’t actually have any rust but it was looking rough and I know they are prone to rusting out so my brother and I did a quick touch up job. This was all with just rattle cans but it came out alright.

Spring 2010:
A buddy of mine blew up his 1999 GS-T and was pretty much done with it. Lucky me it had all black interior. So I buy the car from him, minus motor and trans for the sole purpose of swapping the interior and reselling the car.

2010-10-07_16-56-58_774.jpg

In the middle of swapping things. This was seriously a chore.

While I was at it, I purchased the following and installed them:
-Symborski shift kit.
-B&M short shifter.
-Pre molded aftermarket black carpet (very cut to fit).
-Evo 8 Shift knob.
-Pioneer speakers (rewired).
-Custom Floor mats from some Brazilian company LOL.

I then sold the shell to my cousin with all of my tan interior swapped into it for the same price I paid for the car to begin with. It’s almost as though I got free black interior :p.

So I hadn’t done much to the car since this. I was just enjoying her as she was. Messed around a bit with trying to tune and made it to the track a couple times. I ran a best of 13.9 on my lil t25 before I decided to upgrade.
2011-08-14_22-37-19_404.jpg

This was on my 18’s with the stock clutch. The car is full weight minus A/C. This run was only about 18lbs of boost and was the last time my T25 saw the track.

I still have more to go guys and more pictures to add. Be sure to comment if you would like. Let me know whats up, how you think I am doing, what I maybe should do differently?:D Cheers!

Great story. Keep up the updates! :hellyeah:

More pictures man! Great story

Thanks for taking the time! It has been a journey to say the least and I'm nowhere near finished haha.
Rust prevention, Rubberized Undercoat EVERYTHING :p
Oh believe, I've considered it. Probably one day, but she will still remain a garage queen during the salty months.
Great story. Keep up the updates! :hellyeah:
I appreciate that, a lot of people don't like to take the time and read, so I try to balance the long stories with plenty of pictures.
awesome progress and you have come a long way for sure. Keep up the good work and keep us updated. Sub'd
Stay tuned, more coming your way :thumb:

Here is a time slip, this was my very first run at the track ever.

Scan_Pic0005.jpg

This is the best I did on my T25. After getting my tune a little better and upping the boost to around 18psi.
2011-08-14_22-37-19_404.jpg

I'm on the left.

Oh yeah and stock on the bottom end for now. Actually the whole motor is stock but great compression numbers last I checked. I probably won't hit 10's on the stocker, but it is worth the shot right? I plan on a small build. I already have my 99 block sitting in the garage:D

August 2011:
Slowly but surely I was saving and buying parts for the GSX over the last few months and here is what I picked up.

-Holset Hx35.
-.55ar BEP exhaust housing.
-FP Exhaust manifold.
-FP intake.
-1000cc SBR/PTE injectors.
-VRSF FMIC.
-Tial BOV.
-PR MVS 02 with Tial 38mm wastegate.
-Speed density bundle from Ecmlink.
-PR aluminum radiator with slim fans and shroud.
-SS vacuum lines.

Had all my ceramic coating done by FFWDconnection.com. They offer a new dual stage coating. First one is the ugly dull ceramic and then the black. I literally can lay my hand on my manifold before I am able to even touch my radiator when my car is cooling down.

I bought these poly motor mounts from The EE, then we powdercoated them. I have all 4 but only the 2 are pictured.

So everyone knows with the Holset turbo install you have to dent your factory water pipe. My friend and I decided to make it a little more professional looking. We heated the pipe up, laid another pipe about the same thickness as the compressor cover on the hot spot and tapped it slowly with a hammer. The end result was a perfect fit. We then powdercoated it.

2011-07-119518-55-3795427.jpg

Also did the thermostat housing in the same color.
2011-07-129515-21-4995849.jpg

Also forgot to mention that I swapped out the Aeromotive for a Fuel lab regulator. This one goes with the color scheme a lot more and my Aeromotive had an issue where the pressure would drop off as soon as I shut the car off.

Thanks for all the input folks, keep it coming. Any advice is appreciated. Another time period will be coming soon.

A while back, I was in contact with a guy over seas, who found this for me. Yay! Straight from Japan:cool:.

2011-11-02_17-53-16_999.jpg

I'm going to have it powdercoated to look exactly like this, but with some AN fittings for a catch can setup.
Valve-cover.jpg

November 2011:

I had everything on the car and running beautifully. I found a fantastic tuner, his username is Dacowgod. I'm sure you all have heard of him. This guy is the real deal when it comes to tuning. He tuned my car, remotely in just a few hours over 2 days. We got the car running perfectly on 24psi and using speed density. It went from barely running (after the SD swap) to running better IMO than it ever did before. My tuner said he didn't want to go over 24psi as I was still on the factory head bolts.

The car pulled so amazingly, I really was impressed. It was quite the improvement from a T25. It was short lived unfortunatley however. After all the tuning and trying to run it at the track, I had too much more power and the factory clutch would literally slip at about 18psi all the way to redline.

So, on the agenda for the winter was to add L19 head studs so I could up the boost, and at the same time a new clutch. This is a complete street car so I really don’t want a pucked clutch. After speaking with Tim at TMZperformance.com I opted for the SBC TZ/B with the SSX plate.

Also I will be doing my Brembo brake swap :D, new hub bearings, front axles and Prothane suspension total kit.

Sneak peak at what I’ll be doing this winter:

2011-07-25_15-24-58_322.jpg

2011-10-25_14-54-36_265.jpg

I got new knuckles with these suspension parts which we machined at my uncles house to accept the custom Brembo brackets and clock slightly upwards.

2011-10-25_14-56-01_811.jpg

So this is my build thread, let me know what you guys think. I know it’s lengthy but I am not even close to being finished.
2011-10-07_13-15-07_39.jpg

Great looking build, and i would say has the potential for 10s' depending on traction andtune, the lowered suspension isn't gonna help much, but if it's any conselation, my car g-techs out at 10.90's pretty damn consistantly with a passenger in the car at 28-30psi on E85, zero to sixty times are the sub 4 second range (before i was biogging on AWD now i'm roassting it , a perfect launch and good 60 is hard to hit without breaking the CD)

keep the build pics and progress coming

Thanks for the compliments. The suspension setup is actually an upgrade because when I got the car it was on Tokico blues and like a 2" drop. Was way too low and bouncy. These Illuminas with Eibach pro kit, stiffen it up and raised it up to the point that I think it's the best I am going to get without a real coil-over setup. This upcoming season my engine should be breathing much better so I see at minimum low 11's, or blown engine, or trans, or all three haha. :thumb: More back story, coming soon.

I spent some time at my uncles working on the Brembo swap. He has a lot of precision equipment as he builds guns on the side as a small business. Anyway, rather than do It the typical DSMer way with an angle grinder to remove “enough” material, we took measurements and made an almost perfect fit.

My situation was slightly different than most. I opted for the Evolution X calipers as I found an AMAZING deal on them. They have taller mounting ears so the porting of the caliper is less but on the other hand they require larger bolts too. The brackets I purchased and all 4 spacers had to be bored out. Seeing as they were SS, it took a bit of time but we got it done.

Now we were working on the knuckle. With this bracket setup, it is very easy to install the Brembos. For those who have never researched this, the 95-96 knuckle there is minimal modification required. You simply flatten the back of the factory mounting ears then bolt the brackets on and the caliper. Doing it this way will only allow you to clock them down. 97-99 Knuckle is slightly beefier at the bottom so it requires removal of material whether you clock them up or not. I wanted them clocked upwards. Out of the two choices, I feel this way looks best, so we had much more material to remove.

First thing we did was knock off the “casting flash” as most people refer to it. Basically you want a flat surface for the bracket to sit on.

2011-11-06_04-50-21_204.jpg

2011-11-06_04-50-31_610.jpg

Next was actually going into the side of the knuckle so the top of the bracket would clear. It ended up being a lot less material removed as I thought or even as people make it out to be. There is no chance this has affected the structural integrity of the part machined.

2011-11-06_00-13-15_660.jpg

This photo makes it look like so much is gone, but from the top you will see how minimal it is.
2011-11-06_04-51-32_303.jpg

Here you can see it really is a small dip.
2011-11-06_04-51-24_133.jpg

And from the side.
2011-11-06_04-51-42_381.jpg

I don’t have a picture at this point but the bracket fits like a glove. Now it was time to mock up the caliper and begin the clearance of the factory mounting ear. This is the ear that goes in between the caliper and the bracket. You then thread the hole with an M14x1.5 tap and the aftermarket bracket bolts to it with a short stubby bolt.

2011-11-06_01-49-58_300.jpg

Felt so wrong doing this LOL but once powder coated no one could ever tell. Once again, this has been done before numerous times and it does not deter from the structural integrity of the part.
2011-11-06_01-49-36_627.jpg

2011-11-06_04-53-35_600.jpg

We took measurements and it just so happens the factory casting mark was about the perfect depth to machine to.
2011-11-06_04-53-47_544.jpg

I brought my brand new hub and the Evo X rotor I have to mock up.
2011-11-06_01-15-36_236.jpg

All machine work is done! They look amazing!
2011-11-06_01-32-55_747.jpg

These calipers are in great shape besides cosmetically. In all actuality, they were almost perfect until USPS damaged them in shipping. I plan on having them powder coated the factory red with black Brembo lettering.

I want to do my Prothane suspension bushings, new knuckles, new lateral arms, new lower control arms, new front axles, new hub bearings, bigger sway bars, Brembos and SS brake lines all at the same time this winter while she is down. That way I can get the alignment afterwards and be done with suspension for a while.

This is all for now.

Winter of 2011:

Well my clutch had finally given up on me. I was making too much power and it had high miles anyway. I had to put the car up early as it was almost not driveable anymore. Over that winter season I picked up some parts and did a clutch job.

I picked up a few great deals on the Extremepsi black Friday sale and here are the pictures.

Wiseco 1400HD pistons .020.

2011-11-30_13-21-13_641.jpg

These things are beautiful! It is almost painful to think they have to go into a motor haha.

Next I grabbed a set of ARP L19's.
2011-11-30_13-31-31_809.jpg
Would like some advise on (current users) torque specs. I will be changing them out one at a time without removing the head also with lube.

Also grabbed some Mishimoto silicone radiator hoses. They were just a good deal and a cosmetic upgrade.
2011-11-30_20-12-17_207.jpg

2011-11-30_20-12-25_437.jpg

I also rationalized that I will be doing a clutch soon and rather than paying that $7.50 processing fee twice, I grabbed a Competition Clutch forged clutch fork, OEM throw out bearing and clip.
2011-11-30_13-34-09_617.jpg

I picked this baby up for a steal off Craigslist. I paid $150 for it and it was still brand new in the package. I got it from a guy who claimed that he used to own a performance shop and this was just something he had left over. There is even an retail price sticker on it for $295 so we both know what kind of deal I was getting.
2011-10-08_21-02-25_55.jpg

As some of you probably already know, the Holsets are often finicky about oil pressure and require essentially a perfect drain. To my surprise, my brother snagged this for me at his job :D
photobucket-2628-1328158828476.jpg

Its a factory oil drain flange with about 1" of tube still connected. My idea was to swap the AN fittings out for this at the turbo, 2G factory drain tube (has a larger I.D. than -10an) at the pan, cut the top off and insert a hose with clamps in between them. This would give me the largest drain possible without removing the oil pan and welding a fitting on.

I ordered a few parts from Extremepsi. Since I had to remove the thermostat housing anyway due to a leak, this time I decided to go with a Mishimoto lower temp thermostat and 1.3 bar cap. Also picked up a new O-ring, oil drain gasket, 3/4" pushlock hose, new PCV, and some hose clamps.

Since I was placing an order anyway, I went ahead and picked up the SS brake lines for my Brembo swap :D.

As soon as the temps got warm enough, I was able to use the RTV and put everything backtogether.

After tons of research and some convicing by Tim Zimmer, I ended up going with the Southbend SS-X TZ/B kevlar ceramic clutch kit. I took my car to my cousins shop so I could use his lift on a Saturday and went to work.

After getting the car partially torn apart, I found this..

I don't know what brand the flywheel is but it is definitely aluminum with removable face.

Here is the old PP and clutch. (brand unknown)

Don't mind the oil drain kink. OMG

Here is the scary part, I had to drive 60 miles on the old clutch to use a lift and after pulling it, I'm amazed that the car made the trip.

The rear main seal looked like it was changed the last time the clutch was so that was a plus. It was now time to install the new clutch and flywheel. I purchased all new hardware and used red loctite on them.

We put in 2 new axle seals and GSP axles. The boots were torn on both of mine and there was grease everywhere.

I went with Diaqueen MR 6 speed gear oil in the trans and Redline heavy shockproof in the T-case and rear end. (I eventually swapped out for Redline in the trans too)

I got the master cylinder all adjusted according to Jackstransmissions videos and I removed some of the carpet behind the pedal to get full travel. Thanks to Tim Zimmer for recommending this setup to me. If this single disc can really hold the power it's rated for, I'll never buy a different one.

Next mods include a set of revised lifters, my L19's installed and the Brembos finally.

I did get the Brembos mocked up with my wheels and there is a clearance issue. :( I'm gonna need some hub centric spacers but still unsure on how thick or if I really wanna go that route. The X calipers are massive! I've got 18's and am having clearance issues.

Look here how close to the inside of the rim.

I think they do look really good though.

So questions, comments, anything I'm open to hear what people think. Thanks for checking out my build thread!

So it was May of 2012 and I was finished up breaking in my clutch finally! Worked on getting the car tuned and wanted to hit the track but I was doing other things at the same time.

I ended up with a sweet deal on this Coil on plug setup. (Please no debate on whether I need a CDI box or not) I do plan on running a Dynatek but just not at the moment. I think it will look great though once I polish it up again, and have that VC powder coated like I planned.

I've been spending a lot of time getting my cousins car together. We had to weld in another core support. His dad drilled out the spot welds and welded the new one on exact.

Lastly, I spent a lot of time debating on where to put an oil pressure gauge. In my opinion, three gauges on the pillar is too much, I didn't want to delete my center vent, nor did I want to mount it all ghetto above the steering wheel. I decided to remove the cig lighter, move it to the ash tray area (I don't smoke anyhow) and I'm putting my gauge here. Thoughts?

After a few weeks of tuning, clutch adjustment and trying to get off work at a decent time, we finally made it to the track this year! Started with a terrible misfire issue resulting in the worst pass of my life. Basically coasted to a 25 second 1/4, beat by a chick in an 18 second accrod . I Pulled out of the staging lanes, changed the plug gap down to a .022 and no more issues the rest of the night. I only got 3 passes, here is a pic of my best run. I was pretty satisfied with it on these heavy 18's and street tires being full weight with my heavy self in it.

My new clutch held flawlessly the whole night and I still loved it.

June 22 2012:

After my night at the track and being so stoked to have gone from high 13's to mid 12's, I sent over all the logs to my tuner. After some good points were made, and his jealousy due to the massive availability for me to get E85 around here :p, he convinced me to switch!

After getting the tank empty, filling up straight E85, some crazy adjustments to fuel/timing, I seriously felt that the car pulled harder. Little did I know, how much of a difference it truly was.

This was my best pass of the night on the 22nd, and is currently my best to date (reasons why will be explained later).
So close!!

At this point I was pushing the limits of my injectors safety net and I just couldn't risk it. So I picked up me a set of FIC 2150s along with a couple of other upgrades.

I think it's funny, at the track I don't warm up my tires, my car looks basically stock, I pull up to the tree and from what my buddy tells me everyone comes up with his/her own opinion on my car. They say it's probably 420a or a stock GST or whatever they think, then after I launch they freak. Once I get back to the staging lanes, there is a crowd around my car and tons of questions. The main one being, "is you're car fully built?" Lol. I hate the concept of "fully" but anyway, I just say "nope, stock head, stock block 167k miles, stock cams, stock IM and l19 headstuds.

Thanks for those who actually come on here to read these build threads. I just hope some things I do motivate others or at the very least provides a good laugh. :p

Massive encouragement to me man. I'm in the middle of swapping a 6 bolt into my 95 gsx. It's my first performance car and I've never even sat in a car with more than 200hp. I just read the whole journal top to bottom and its def impressive and intimidating. Lol but now I'm even more motivated to finish it... Thanks :)

Pretty good numbers from a fairly stock setup. Im doing the same setup for my auto now. How much boost were you running on that 118mph trap speed? Also whats spool like?

Thank you guys for commenting on my build. It sucks to come on here and looks like nobody is interested as it has fallen off the new posts list LOL.

I'm going for even better numbers this year and hopefully a dyno session. I haven't even gotten to the current part of this build yet. The 118 pass was 28psi and that is the most I have run. At that point with so many stock parts, there was severe bottle-necking and my VE would drop off the more boost we ran.

I'm opening her up this year with an intake, cams and different exhaust side. Looking for a minimum of low 11's or bust haha. I may reach my goal of 10s after all. Stay tuned! :thumb:

You got this! Just keep updatimg the thread till you reach the goal. Nothing better than that:thumb:

Good thing that e85 is available so you could run a little bit more boost to get into the 11s at minimum. Im eagerly waiting for the fp housing to see how it works. It should help considerably with the .68 housing.

Thanks man! I honestly believe it had 11's in it as it was, I just don't feel like I got enough track time. I never got to use no lift to shift at the track and I kind of babied it anyway. I saw where another guy with my same trap speed was running 11.7's. I'm extremely confident in either low 11's or blowing my engine this season haha. Maybe both.:rocks:

I wish I had waited for the FP housing, but I had no idea it was even a concept until way later. Good luck to you too.
