Well, it was time for me to do a smog check again so I made sure everything was street legal and took it down to a test center. It managed to pass the standard CO, CO2, and HC tests but failed the NO test big time (max allowed was 799 and my score was 3150). I guess this is something new they test for and from what I've heard, NO is a product of oil burning but not positive on this. Has anyone had problems with this or knows what I can do to fix this? Engine runs fine (has about 108k miles on it) and compression is good. I haven't been using a catch can so I know there was probably some oil in the intake tract but it doesn't seem like that would cause such a high reading.

ive never gone through emissions testing but im pretty sure NO = NOX so here goes...

nox (nitrates of oxygen) is created when combustion temps exceeds 2500F, occurs when engine is under load and not idle, a slightly lean mixutre will cause the most nox over rich, nox increase with combustion efficiency. can be caused by: engine overheating, EGR system malfunction, lean fuel mixture, carbon deposits in combustion chamber (raises compression ratio and prevents proper heat transfer), timing could be advanced too far or timing not advanced enough, EGR position sensor is faulty, or a faulty catalytic converter
