I just bought a 1996 Eagle Talon TSi-AWD and I'm having problems with the emissions. I searched around on the site and nothing really helped at all. I went in to get my emissions done in order to get my car registered, but some had apparently either cleared the codes in the ECU or the battery died. Apparently, w/my OBD-II checks weren't completed. I went to the Mitsu dealer and they said that the chances of me completing the checks on my own weren't very high.

Any Ideas?

I believe you can check codes on 2G's the same way we can on 1G's. You'll have to search, but generally all you have to do is probe 2 tabs on the dignostic port, turn the key to the on position and count the number and type of needle bounces.

If you had a code, but the battery was cleared just drive around a bit. It'll come back if the problem still exists.

Otherwise... Do you know what is causing you to fail? You could be running rich. Your cat could be dead. It could be a lot of things. You'll have to give more info.

Well,

At the emissions place, they said "Just drive around for a bit and the codes will set themselves." and I was like... "Okay! GREAT! An excuse to drive around aimlessly!" After a couple of days though, there wasn't a difference. So I went back and they told me to go to the Mitsu dealer for scenarios to actually set them myself. So I went, and they quoted me 5 hours at $90 per hour to set the scenarios.

It's not that I'm running rich, or lean or anything is wrong w/the car... Everything that they COULD check w/the OBD-II machine checked out and passed. I'm really confused actually, because this seems pretty new to me.

Has anyone else had problems with this? The guy @ Mitsubishi said that the 96's had a lot of problems with the ECU and this isn't uncommon. I've driven a good 250 miles since the intial testing, and still nothing >.<

So if you dont have codes whats the problem? They are gone and the car passes emsissions so just finish up the job and write the ticket. The 96 does not have any particular problems thats bullshit.

Goto another emissions place and drive in like normal and have the car finished up. I have no idea why they want you to get a code now but there is no reason. I have had O2 sensor faults that went away and never came back. All the ecu has to do is see one wierd parameter and it will set the light and may never come back on again. Just forget it and have them finish up.

You cant clear or check CE light codes the same as OBD1 it's totally different so no jumpering the port. Also when you pull the battery the ECU on OBD2 remembers the codes anyway, it's not that stupid. Unless you have a pocket logger or other OBD2 scan tool they don't just delete. Tell the bananna mechanic I said he's a moron.

Yeah, seriously. I don't understand why they would want you to force a code.

Good to know. I don't know where I heard otherwise. Thanks. :thumb: (another reason I'll stick to my 1G:) )

I got it checked again today, and I still didnt' pass... I went to a couple of places like you said, and they all said the same thing. Someone reset the ECU and now it doesn't have the data it needs.

On the paper they gave me, it says "Abort Code 40 - Readiness Monitors Not Set".
1. Catalyst not ready
2. Evaporative system not ready
3. Oxygen sensor not ready
4. Oxygen sensor heater not ready
5. EGR system not ready

I have no clue what this means... Does this help at all?

Thanks for the feedback though, I appreciate it!

Well, worst case, if you end of having to spend money at the mitsu dealer, you may want to look into exemptions. In ohio, if you spend $300 dollars towards fixing emissions, and still don't pass, they will give you an exemption. Thats worst case scenario though. Good luck.

i had the sameprob with my mustang try to get ists past matinance records, then make sure all parts were put on right!

Well,

I went in again today, and the readiness monitors aren't set... They said just to drive it more, or to take it to the Mitsu dealer... Any suggestions yet?

>.< Howie >.<

I am looking to relocate to Anchorage, and I have a modified 1g. Do they do a visual inspection, or just a tailpipe test.....I have aftermarket parts, but I pass at the tailpipe.

Ok what is going on with your car is, on odb-II cars after you erase codes the ecu remembers that there was a code, it is so you cant reset the code and smog it before the code shows up again. To reset the monitors it takes around 40-50 miles. So for you monitors to not reset after 200 miles, you do have a problem. The dealers do have secrets that regular mechanics don't, so you may need them. I would try getting another ecu from a friend or somehow, and give it a try with a different ecu. Also if your battery drains or is low it will take another 40 miles to reset the monitor. Good Luck
