I am doing the same with my Evo calipers. PITA to hold the effing cap on and sand blast. Used to think it was fun blasting these calipers, but the coating is tough to get off, especially when using fine sand and nothing to keep moisture from getting in my way. :(
 
Hey ct78155, is that first pic coated in truck bedliner? It looks pretty cool with the yellow latters.. Did you do all them yourself, or you have a company do it for ya?

Just curiosity sake, Why do you have a 1g intake manifold and a 2g thermostat housing? Did you port your 2g head to accept the 1g manifold or do you have one of the bastard child heads that takes a mix?

Yes, I have a 1g intake manifold and TB, on a 2g engine. The head is port matched to the larger 1g ports. I am not sure if that is worth any power because I have yet to dyno it.

It was like that when I bought the car, including ghetto-fied mounts for the 2g coilpacks and power transistor, and the ol' tubing-super-glued-onto-the-map-sensor mod. I have since rectified those issues, by mounting the MAP sensor directly to the plenum and getting the proper 1g coilpacks, wires, and power transistor bracket.

Just wondering, how does powder coat stand up to extreme heat?? Say like an exhaust manifold?? In a week or so I am going to do my intake mani,throttle body and IC pipes..If the exhaust mani handles the heat I want to do that as well.

Why in the world would you want to powdercoat a turbo manifold.

Normal powdercoat does not stand up to high heat. The highest temp I have seen on powder (specific high temp powder) is 1200*. I personally would not do this. Instead, I would either get it ceramic coated or just paint it using high temp paint. Both of these options can typically go up to 1600* or even 2000*.
 
Im starting out with my DIY powdercaot set and i am having problems with keeping the powdwer off the flanges the high temp tape just doesnt seem to stick to the metal, any advice?

Are you using the green plastic tape? If you have the flanges fully cleaned, it should stick with no problems. You have to completely de-grease the surface, though. I usually bake the part at about 400F for 10 minutes or so, after degreasing, and then the tape sticks quite well.
 
I never have baked parts first, but I know you must clean them very well. I sand blast anything I am going to coat. I also have some 60 grit paper ready to smooth out spots were there was a little rust. You gotta make these things so clean you could do surgery with them. I have just started my self, but since I sandblast everything and use the purple degreaser on it to clean, I have never messed up so far. Right now I am just using the craftsman gun (same as harbor freight) and a toaster oven. I dont have a big oven yet but I sure want one. Here are a few pics of my stuff.

Make sure you are properly cleaning the part first. I coal slag it, hose it off with an air gun very good, then give it a bath in brake clean. Make sure to let it fully dry, but if you have to, you can speed up the process using an air gun, but make sure you have a good filter system because you don't want anything sprayed back onto the part now that it is clean. Once it is dry, I tape it up and preheat it for a few minutes. Then coat and bake. If you get powder on some part you don't want, just take something small like a cotton swab and wipe it off. As long as you haven't put it in the oven, the powder can be wiped/blown off if you need to clean or fix an area or just start over.

Skip the exhaust manifold, 1700 degree temperatures and powder coat don't go well together. You'll be fine on all the other parts you plan on coating.
 
I wanna keep my engine bay looking good, and out of all the dsm bays iv seen I think I got a verry clean one. When I get it all done I think It will look pretty spiffy:D

Anyone ever tried welding raised lettering on the calipers? Like the the valve covers.
 
1700 :confused: As in 1700F? Something would be wrong if your exhaust manifold got that hot!

At cruise you will be seeing around 1200 deg F temperatures, when doing a hard pull you will see temps in the 1600 deg F range.......of course the 1700 deg F is not somewhere you want to be for long.

But yeah, if I had it I might use it. I dont think it would fit ontop of a holset??

The stock heat shield depends on the manifold you're running, not the turbo. If your Holset has a Mitsu flange on it, then it might fit depending on what manifold you have. If it has a T3 or T4 flange, then you're probably right that it won't fit.

Yea thats what i was using it may be because its a little colder in the garage. I was taping the neck on my water neck housing and the tape fell right off.
 
I haven't had issues with the green tape, but Eastwood has a different style of tape that isn't plastic-like. Maybe that would work better for you, it works fine for me.
