Porting Tools

I just purchased a Harbor Freight electric die grinder that I'm going to use to port my 14b. I was curious if these harbor freight bits will work:

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

and / or:

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Or if I should go to sears and get a set of carbide burrs? Also what sizes are recommended for the die grinder?

your going to be wasting your time and money trying to do porting with those crappy bits. you can check sears but im 99% sure they aren't going to have the carbide burs you need. online is your best bet and you only need one, those things chew through the exhaust mani, turbo, and o2 housing like butter. just got to be careful you don't take off too much! good luck and if your not sure what your getting yourself into theres plenty of posts on tuners and VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions on how to do it.

I think I used a single cut carbide bit when I did mine but hell I don't remember. If you port anything alum hit it with wd-40 to keep it from clogging up.

I bought a set of carbide bits from my MAC tool guy at work and one of them looked identical to that.^^ They work great for porting hard metals, and you can get a nice finish if you work at it.

I used the three piece set from sears and it did most of my porting job (exhaust mani, turbo, and cleaned up the head and intake) and the only one I used form the set was the tree shaped, round nose one. The other two were kind of useless.

The second link will probably work, but I bet you use them all b/c they will get shredded. I shop @ HF alot, but some things just don't hold up.

Get a real carbide double-cut titanium coated burr bit for $25 and be done with it. I got the long shank cylindrical bit with the rounded end, but I think it was more like $35.

If you don't want to wait to order bits online, there should be a specialty tool store that carries them in most cities. I have a place locally called "Tools Plus"...its one of those places that you wouldn't want to buy anything from cause the prices are so damn high.

Ace hdwe might have them, but I'm not sure.

I just sent my 2g manifold over to the precision machining class in my school and its getting drilled out 7cm! I'm about to buy those from overstock and port my 14b though

BTW it is not 7cm dia. its closer to 6.5 cm dia...

Those bits look like Dremel bits, not porting bits.

Get some real carbide burrs as other people have posted. They will cost you a good bit of money, but will do the work a lot faster than what you posted, as well as last a lot longer.

Ok cool, Thanks!! I just sent them an email. They said they won't be able to bore it out until next week so I should be okay. I'm still waiting for the turbo gasket too!

Wow Good thing people are her that pay attention or new guys would ruin so much stuff But thats what forums like this are for and so far this is the best one ive seen for feedback as long as u do ## searching first u get allot of help. keep it up guys!!!!!!

Polishing is a debatable topic. And at the most, the benefits are VERY small for the amount of effort.

I didn't know I was a "new guy". I just happened to order parts at the time when they were overstock. So I'm still waiting for the turbo gasket.

I'd port the manifold and the O2 housing. Otherwise I don't think I would spend time on a T-25. Buy a used 14b (Think of all the people that swap out a 14b for a 16g), with no shaft play and port that.

The harbor freight ones are junk, go to a good tool store and get some carbide burrs. There's finer ones for steel and larger gapped ones for aluminum.

Those are for steel though (nothing wrong just stating for the OP's knowledge) YOu will want ones for aluminum if you're doing the head and you'll want something like the ones in that link if you're doing the o2 housing, exhaust mani, or turbine housing,

YOu might check you local welding supply store, the one near me has the best deals in town on GOOD carbide burrs, only about 10 - 13 dollars each where they can be as high as 40 bucks at some places for good ones. harbor freight has NO good ones what so ever..their rasp set is more for wood IMO

Yea I won't be porting my head. I'll be doing my turbo and a little more on my 2g manifold. And maybe o2 housing. I just figured $35 for 8 burrs sounds like a deal and the guy above said they worked great. Otherwise the ones at the local hardware store are $25 - $30 a burr.
