So I'm working on getting my transmission clean, It has a semi shiny brush look but many imperfections as far as looking prestige, and I have decided to paint it once its all clean.

The question is what color? aluminum look, black or leave it as is.

not that it matters but just for the curious fella's this is off a 2g AWD trans.

I would say paint it a flat silver of some sort. Then I would paint the mount bracket and other parts with a nice satin black and it would look pretty clean. I plan to do the same to my transmission in my gsx before I put it back in the car.

go to the auto parts store and pick up some non gloss silver paint with a 550 degree rating and paint it and it will look like new

I just painted mine with Stainless steel color that i bought from pepboys. It came out pretty good.

Unless its going in a DSM with a seriously tucked and cleaned engine bay, I personally wouldn't bother doing any more. Cleaning or painting. Here's why:

As you can see it gets hidden pretty well. I admit my engine bay is far from show quality. But even with a fuse box relocation, metal intake pipe, and other engine cleanup mods, that area just isn't very exposed on your typical DSM. So I say leave it the way it is. Nobody wants a greasy trans, but there's no point in spending a ton of time/energy on something that will likely go unnoticed.

Dont waste your time. it will get chipped up putting it in and will look even worse. Shine it up the best you can and let it roll

Not necessarily, I use my hoist with the chain bolted where the shifter cable bracket is bolted. The trans goes in w/o a scratch.

Meh, I spent about 2 hours cleaning and painting my trans and it was time well spent. Some people just like things to look nice for themselves, not for others to see.

As far as it chipping goes, I suppose if you drag it around on the concrete it would, but I've had mine in and out numerous times and the paint still looks great, sure you have to be a little bit more careful, but when is that ever a bad thing?

I agree with silver. I did black on one car, and silver on my DD. The silver looks much nicer and cleaner. The black looked dirty and is easier to see when it starts chipping.

Depends on the color scheme of the engine bay. Do you have a current pic?

not the most recent as more things have been installed but close to it.
the color is desert tan. and every thing so far has been powder coated flat tan or wrinkle flat black.

I wouldnt bother unless you have the time, maybe a good cleaning and call it a day. you'll never see the quality of your work unless your bay looks like this and even then its pretty well hidden.

just saying, my opinion.

No neon green choices? (I wish I could find a pic of mine. It actually stands out, LOL).

Painted a lot of these different colors (including neon green, neon orange and fireman red. Obviously some for just fun). Believe me the paint will last very well. For added coverage you can always clear it.

The only problem you will have is if you start dropping fluids on it (obviously gas from installing/uninstalling the rail being a big problem). But if you keep fluids off of it, it is a definite addition to the color of the engine bay.

Agreed on the black; it just blends into the darkness of the engine bay. Best color imo; aluminum/silver.

majority wins!

Factors that made me decide:

1- Over time, any paint will fade so a faded and chipped BLACK trans will look worse than a faded silver-to-silver trans.

2- I liked the idea of a clean stock look on the transmission over a black one.

3-And the majority liked aluminum color so I went for it since I plan on selling the project shortly it is complete and I didn't want to have a product that I only liked, although 99% of the build is done to my liking, there are exceptions like these that I like to ask for opinions.

So thank you all for your feedback, they where all helpful.

New bolts are soo nice. Remember the chromed 3S trans tim did? That thing was awesome!

I used a wire wheel to clean the trans, and then just cleared it. It looks pretty good.

I wire wheeled it and although it knocked off all the grime it didnt give it the luster I was looking for.

Put the time and money into something else. Painting something you'll never really see seems pointless unless you've completed everything on your mod checklist.

I'm keeping this build low key as much as I can. Its a full top to bottom build. no hints, no updates until its done...

I would paint it the silver color, it would look good and just like others are saying wont show the signs of chipping like black would....and If your making your car for show it adds a bit of flare to it...
