okay just put the expensive stuff in and its now shifting like a CHAMP again. i mixed 2 bottles of royal purple with 1 bottle of castrol synthitic 75-90 GL4. this set up makes it feel like it did before i put the clutch in.

thanks everyone for the help

so is it safe to have half of the Pennzoil Synchromesh , and half gear oil ?
since im in FL where it can get hot at times ?

Draining the Synchromesh out of my car today after 5000 miles.. too thin for this weather.. i cant get the car in gear in the morning

Ive used Costal 75w-90 since my rebuilt trans, getting close to 2000 miles and no problems so far, changed the fluid 2 times

Ive been using penzoil synchromesh recently as well. I had a tranny rebuild by TRE and the first time draining the fluid it came out thin as water as well. I recently found a vendor that stocks redline gear fluid so I'm going back to the real stuff.

But damn does that stuff get expensive. I always have to end up pulling the transmission out every couple of weeks because something breaks. I probably have thousands spent on Penzoil, LOL.

maybe its not the penzoil. maybe its TRE. Breaks every few weeks sounds like mine. I know with my TRE tranny the fluid comes out silver every time i drain it. I LOVE TRE  Ok I will stop there as to not cause any problems.

Ah dammit, I just bought some Synchromesh today because NAPA was closed. I was set on MT-90 but didn't get back home in time and I've used Synchromesh before with no problems (that I remember). I did noticed switching over to MTL back in the day that it shifted really nicely cold, but after it warmed up it got notchy

The Synchromesh I just bought I was planning to put in my Stage II TRE tranny that is going to be installed along with some other stuff...maybe I should return it come morning time and get some MT-90? This thread isn't making me feel to secure about going with Synchromesh.

I would use it and drain it after 1000 miles then put the redline in after the trany has broken in. Your better off with a thiner fluid since built tranys are so tight new. Just take it easy for a coupple thousand miles.

Or, read the other thread by all the people who've switched to it and love it. I think I'm at 50K on the batch I put in. I've had no reason to change it or change from it.

Too late LOL, I returned it back to Autozone and went to NAPA and picked up 3 qts of Redline MT-90. Cost me about 12 bucks more but it's cool, I actually have had MTL in the car for about two years now so MT-90 should do fine considering it's a heavier weight.

I already swapped it for MT-90 but I feel more content with that decision. But yeah I'm def going to go easy on the car when I get it back. New 6-bolt, tranny, clutch, and flywheel.

I've used Pennzoil Synchromesh ever since I bought my car and I'm about to switch to MT-90 because the Pennzoil is breaking down in less than 6 months/ 3000 miles. I'd heard some good things about a Pennzoil/Redline Heavy Shockproof mix from one or two people, then I read another post where somebody said they'd seen the shockproof come out of suspension and clump instead of staying in a mix with the Pennzoil. Shep recommends the MT-90 on his site along with the Pennzoil, I've already proven to myself that the Pennzoil is too thin for my car in my location, so it's time to make a switch.

Perhaps it depends more on driving style. Those who shift hard or are launching violently might need a thicker fluid to protect the gears. My grandma-style of driving (gotta save gas, right?) and my stock clutch are keeping my driveline safe. My tired synchros would probably rebel if I put a heavy fluid in there anyway.

Perhaps, I will let you guys know how my Stage II TRE responds to MT-90. It'll be a new transmission with new fluid so if it is really smooth than it might be due to one or the other.

I replaced my tranny oil a couple days ago with GM Synchromesh and now I've got what looks to be an intermediate shaft bearing problem, and a tranny leak from somewhere.

Is this just a bad coincidence?

Did the SM cause fast wear, or just loosen up the old crap that was sealing and holding the tranny together?

Either way this sucks as the tranny is on it's way out of the car for a rebuild this weekend.

I have two questions, what did our cars come with in the tranny from the factory?

And 2nd, what type and where would I get some good synthetic gear oil such as the Royal Purple or AmsOil. Whats the correct weight and type? 75/90? GL4?

I don't know where you can get the Amsoil, but NAPA has Redline and Royal Purple. I know Pepboys carries Royal Purple motor oil, but I'm not sure about tranny fluid.

I don't know if the 1G requires a different weight but for the 2G you are correct with the weight, 75w90 or 75w85 GL-4.

Just replaced the transmission fluid in my uncle's 2g GS-T not too long ago with Pennzoil Synchromesh.

Man I am impressed, the transmission feels like new! New clutch master and slave cylinder, bled properly, Synchromesh makes for a very nice feeling transmission. Stock clutch too.

I will definitely have to get this for my GSX(s).

resurrecting this thread. i am going to replace my transmission fluid soon, and after reading this, i am a little confused on what kind of fluid to get. im leaning away from penzoil syncromesh because, after reading this thread, it appears that this fluid doesnt do as well as other fluids in warmer climates. since i live in texas, i think a slightly thicker fluid will do. also, i know some transmission fluids dont react well with our syncros, so those are obviously out; and synthetic fluids are out also because my tranny is old and i dont want to develop any leaks. What fluid, or mixture of fluids, do you guys recommend for a manual 1g tranny in warm climates?

honestly i run the coastal 80w90 it works very awesome and have yet to have issues. you could go on yahoo and search gl4 gear oil and see what pops up and go for it. Usually they all will work well....opinions get in the way alot since they will all work pretty much equally as well

3 years later and I'm still using the Penzoil, if that tells you anything. Ive ran it in the summer - 95+ degrees, and winter - below freezing during the days and often around 0* at night and tranny shifts fine. It seems to be a good all around weather fluid if you ask me.
