Painted taillight

I picked up a set of used taillights and the previous owner blacked them out. It looks like they just sprayed the outside with a primer then black spray paint and left the part where the light shines through untouched. The paint is cracked and has chips in it so I want to remove it. What would be the best method to remove the paint and primer? Also how thick is the lens, would I be able to wet sand any imperfections out to make it look good again?

Any recommendation on what I should use for grit?

I would use 220 then 320 and autozone sells a red spray paint for tail lights it works pretty well, so you could re spray them when you get done sanding. So that way the tail lights are clean and un-hazy

If prob use 400 to cut it down and 800 to smooth it out. Then clear over
