OMG .. manifold to turbo bolts broke

So. Broke them off few days ago thought it wasn't a big deal

Took it to mechanic he said take to machine shop because he couldn't tap the. Aluminum, so went to local machine shop and he had one with a nut welded on the the small broke piece hanging out and he broke it more and couldn't tap even when he heated it up and said he wouldn't do it

He sent me somewhere else and they wouldn't do it either, am I screwed?

I had one break on me last year..Took it to my local trusted mechanic..He drilled out the hole absolutly perfect, but the cost for one to be drilled out was 75 bux...

Your not screwed..You'll find the right person to fix it..

Worst case scenario, they screw it up and you have to buy a blown 14g and swap turbine housings..

Wes-Justin doesn't have and good ones laying around..I asked him about it two days ago..

well with all that find another turbo or another housing 14bs are pretty cheap got mine for under 100 bucks in great shape 7 years ago, it lasted until i sold it.

Why are you mentioning aluminum? Those are hardened steel, not aluminum. Any decent machine shop can get those out and not break a sweat.

90$ shipped on ebay...Looked at them two days ago when justin told me he didn't have any good housings laying around..

Only problem with those..They don't have the little nipple that fits into the cartridge..If you have even taken a turbo apart you will know what I'm talking about.Also the housing is not ground down on the ebay ones behind where one of the o2 bolts threads in..But It didn't look like that big of issue since the bolt goes in on the other side...

Only problem with those..They don't have the little nipple that fits into the cartridge..If you have even taken a turbo apart you will know what I'm talking about.Also the housing is not ground down on the ebay ones behind where one of the o2 bolts threads in..But It didn't look like that big of issue since the bolt goes in on the other side...

Just check the classifieds. I have seen a few 14b's in the last month that I can almost bet are still available. They may even be willing to just sell you the hot side. Shouldn't cost much at all if you go that route.

Same thing happened to me! Got it at the shop as we speak, they said it would be no problem and would only cost $35-45. This is a good shop though, the only one locally with a 4g63 torque plate. I saw a 14b almost perfect at the junkyard the other day........pm me i may be able to snag it for ya.

I know someone with a 14b for sale <<<<<<<<<< 75 bucks its yours PM me. Very little side to side i was boosting 24PSI on it before i took it off the car never gave me a problem.

Used hotsides are cheap, probably could get a ported one cheap even. They are super easy to change out too.

Or like others have said, used 14b/16g maybe. And godspeed turbos are garbage stay away.


Edit: Actually just today while changing out an exhaust mani gasket i broke a stud off in the head. Using an "easy out" bit i was able to remove it in a few minutes without messing up the threads.

I tried using an easy out, but my mom bought the wrong ones when I sent her to sears..And I also think I may have been doing it wrong..

Like I said I just took it to the local mechanic..A little pricey to get mine drilled out, but it got me on the road again..

The bolts break off all the time, and yeah welding a nut on to screw them out never works even though that trick does work on most bolts. Easy out's always end up being a waste of time for me on any bolt that's in half decent; they either do nothing, or break off making it impossible to drill or do anything else.

You have to drill them totally out and then retap the housing; if you do a good enough job drilling, you won't mess up the threads in the housing much if at all.

I've use high speed steel drill bits and they work good for me. I start with a small bit to make a dimple in the center then move to a bigger one and drill it through. If i drill it a little off to the side I then use my dremal and carbide bit and work it as close to the threads as possible. Then I use a tap to finish it. This takes me about 2hrs for one bolt.

Oh yeah, lube the drill bit to keep cool and so it wont dull to quick.

This happened to me last year. I got some high speed drill bits, cutting oil, beer (to preemptively relieve the frustration) and took my time drilling it out in steps. Once I was down to the last 1 or 2mm the screw finished breaking apart and everything was great.

I have since used Antiseaze every time and would highly recommend it. I had a buddy with a 1g who broke 3 of 4 taking apart a stock setup. He was able to drill them all out but it took a while.

So 400$ to keep for a few months and selling a used Turbo isnt easy around here. And I've never used the classifieds here. Its just a pain on a 4.5 inch screen to scroll through everything poor excuse I know

Or 100$ and get it in.4 days and sell it for about what I paid if it hasn't blown

Hotsides are a dime a dozen. If no one can 'do it' or they're expensive, then just buy a new one.

It's worked a few times for me in the past. After welding a bolt to the broken stud, we heated it up with a torch, then melted bees wax in around the threads. Then, worked the bolt back and forth, loose to tight, to move the wax down. Once the wax worked its way all the way down, the broken section threaded right out.

Hey man its your money, but if you did your research it is possible to change a MHI evo3 16g to a 20g, td05 that is. So all in all, you might even save more money with MHI turbo. Might only cost you a compressor wheel, if you can rebuild it yourself.

You are right, that is a poor excuse. Library's have computers that people can use for free, with large screen monitors.....
