So im taking apart my engine and my valves on exhaust side are white as snow, while there is a pungent smell of gas in crank part of the block. I know its probably bad rings but could there be any other problems?

It is not uncommon for old valves to have white deposits on them. What do the spark plugs show? That is the true answer to what is going on.

Black plugs would obviously be rich. Being a stock, non turbo car, you would have to have serious problems for the car to not be running correctly. It is plausible fuel is getting past the piston rings however.

I just would not attribute and old engine and white valves with a lean condition.

Unless you have a major problem like a cracked head or blown hg, ultimately it will come down to rings... but that doesn't mean the rings are bad. If you only drive short distances and don't give the engine a chance to warm up effectively, the engine will operate mostly under cold conditions, putting excess fuel into the mix. Combustion gasses will inevitably make their way past the rings regardless of how well they seal, so even in a super tight engine if all it sees is cold running you're going to get rich blow by... and since the engine doesn't get hot enough that fuel won't have a good chance to evaporate and get sucked out through the vacuum system.

I would have suggested compression and leak down tests, but you already have the engine apart.

plugs are snow white, but I think that was because of a few overheats, I was thinking of putting my engine back together and if was still running lean sending my injectors for a clean
