What can be the possible causes? Is it as simple as a cover gasket? As complex as ____?

searching found me a bunch of "oil on belt" threads, could what is causing the leak also have gotten oil on the belt?

Valve cover gasket.

Pop the cover and see if it's leaking around the cam gears as well. Has the valve cover gasket ever been replaced?

no, the valve cover gasket is leaking like a sieve itself, going to replace asap (another thread in here). So that can be what's making a mess on the timing cover? How do I rule out anything being wrong with the timing cover/internals? Take the cover off

camshaft seal? that doesn't sound like any fun.

Pop the top cover off to expose the cam gears. It's only 3 bolts. If the belt has a good bit of oil on it, you'll want to replace it as it'll weaken the rubber.

Be sure to get the 4 spark plug gaskets, VC gasket and the half moon plug either in rubber or the more permanent metal plug.

took the cover off, no oil on the belt or mess inside

but, apparently the valve cover leak is bad enough that the wind is getting the oil up side the cam cover, so I need to get that bish changed asap.

Not a drop anywhere on the belt??? Wow with that cover oil staining. Well, get the VC gasket changed and the other gaskets in there as well. Any leaking elsewhere?

yeah, I was shocked at the belt and gears being dry, crazy. Hopefully I can tackle the vc gasket this weekend.
