I have a leak under the hood.. A pretty bad leak at that, i have zero'd it down to right in between the block and head.. would this be a head gasket problem or something else?? here is a pic to help explain.

OK i am sorry i should of detailed the picture. This picture is from the front side of the engine on the passenger side this would be just left of the exhaust manifold just under the coolant fill cap..

Wow from the pic I already see one of the exhaust manifold bolts missing. Blow bye will make a mess, new gasket and get the manifold bolts. Also The most common place when oil is present like this is the valve cover gasket. Now I'm not saying that is what's bad because it could be multiple things. But if you are loosing coolant and have a sweet smelling white smoke out the exhaust then yes head gasket. Also if you have blue smoke coming out the exhaust then it could be the head gasket. Have you performed a compression test yet? There are many things you can do to narrow down the problem but get yourself a gasket kit and start replacing them, and buy the bolts for the exhaust manifold.

yeah when i took this pic is the first time i had noticed a manifold bolt missing.. just because it was the first time i had removed the heat shield.. that will be fixed soon.. but as for coolant it is always full so i don't think i am loosing coolant. the only spot i see oil coming out is the spot in the picture and it is coming out quite quick thats why i was wondering if a bad head gasket would cause oil to come out the engine externally not internally. or if it is a bigger problem like a warped head. or maybe loose bolt but im clueless at this point . losing to much oil to care to keep working on it might be a scrap yard donation LOL.

As I recall, one of the manifold stud holes passes into an oil galley in the head, and it's on that end of the motor. It's a common place for oil to leak if the mani stud is loose and it can leak into the mani and/or out making messes and blue exhaust smoke. New gasket, studs, nuts, clean it up, see what happens.

I had an exhaust stud stripped out on my head in that location and it caused it to leak oil. I also recommend to check the studs.

Just a update... getting around to cleaning up the engine and fixing the manifold bolt and noticed there was no more oil leaking and oil levels are right where they should be... wtf??? it was losing a quart a day now nothing??? no oil pressure drop. no oil spot on the ground nothing.. what would cause a engine to leak oil only when it wants to?? and to leak that much oil when it wants to urrrrr this car is starting to be a bother.. any insight would be appreciated... thanks

nope not a drop and it stopped losing oil before i cleaned the motor and replaced the manifold bolt becuase the bolt was a broken stud that is gonna have to be drilled and re tapped.. i don't understand how it could be losing a quart a day then all of a sudden not even lose a drop of oil :banghead:?? wtf :| what you guys think?

Thats crazy I"ve never heared of that, but if stop leaking thats a plus.. I"d defenity not forget about the problem, contionously check your oil and observe the engine bay.

I broke a manifold stud off in that same hole, ( and in trying to get it out it went in farther) and had oil leak like crazy upon start up in that EXACT same spot, changing the stud did not fix if for me though, it was the head gasket. My guess is that the stud plugged the hole and caused the old gasket to fail on mine. Very strange that it stopped though.

thanks guys for all your help.. as of right now still no oil leak.. still has plenty of oil and oil pressure is about half way while driving, just below the bottom safe line?? when idling or bottom optimal line.. degrease the engine and power sprayed the crap out of it and still haven't seen a leak.. so as in all your suggestions, i will keep a eye on the oil levels and oil pressure gauge and keep a eye on the ground under the car and go from there... thanks again everybody...
