Oh JOY! More Rust, ARG!

Got some work done when I was out at my parents place, not a bunch of stuff unfortunately.

I pulled all the interior out minus the dash, carpet and seats for now. Looking at all the stuff I had in the Tracker, I doubt the dash would have fit in there along with everything.

I'll start cleaning everything and dying it next week.

On my trip of here my bumper suffered some damage and was cracked in the middle.

I got my hands on a 2Gb Talon bumper and lights locally for a steal. Still needs to be painted of course plus I will transfer 1 set of my FX-R projectors to the other headlights.

With the interior out I started poking around with a screw driver and found some more rust (ARG!), I'll have to make up a couple patches for the rear floor.

Also pulled the wing off too see how bad the rust is on the hatch, I'm hoping I can patch this for now to save having to buy a carbon fiber hatch.

Some good news in regards to the rust, the lower rad cross member is the only piece that is bad/rusted out. The surface rust will get ground down and hit with POR15.

That's where everything sits now. I'm going out again on Saturday and hope to get the complete harness labeled. I might bring the dash home but it's still got to remain drivable just a bit longer so we'll see.
Rust repair won't happen till spring time but I hope to get the skirts off to see how bad the rockers are.

I know how you feel, I'm working on getting rid of the rust also. I looked under my car and I said "HOLY $HIT!!!" so now I'm saving my cash for bushings so when I take it appart I can remove the rust, paint and improve the handeling. I'm also replacing the strut towers. Mitsubishi paint has always been low quality and dousnt help that people neglect our cars.

I know exactly how you feel as well. My first DSM which was a 1998 Talon Tsi Awd, was rusting on the underside of the hatch badly, in the spare tire well, in the wheel wells, bubbling on the drivers strut tower, the rockerpanels were starting to rust, front passenger fender, floor boards, and who knows what else. Now I have a 1997 Gst that is from Cali and is VERY rust free. Good luck with the project!

I would just scrap and start trolling the sale forums for something in California. You can pick up a roller for $500-$800. I wouldnt call that "some rust"

Yeah, I kinda gotta agree. You'll chasing rust for a while. Take your parts and know-how to a new DSM platform. Even if you have to buy a runner for a little more than a shell.

I'm not going to sell this car for another shell. Rust repair doesn't scare me, I've dealt with much worse then this. A good bit of it is surface.

Also I live on an island in the Atlantic Ocean, there is salt air everywhere. It doesn't matter if you don't drive your car in the winter or you do it will still rust.
I hoping once I fix it all and get some POR15 on her it will last a lot longer.

yea rust is a horrible thing. especially sence i live in nebraska. i have to redo almost my whole floor because of it

That rust is not bad at all. I have some in the same exact places minus the hatch. Nothing a little POR-15 can't fix. You can also get that rear trunk panel from mitsubishi (Drivers side one at least). You just have to drill out the spot welds holding it in and replace it.

Yea, I've found all those panels on JNZ's OEM Parts site for under $100.

I pulled up the carpets yesterday and the floor pans are pretty much perfect, some minor surface rust but nothing crazy at all.
