Ahhh this is an amazing thread. Makes me want to whip out the ole' welder and get back into it. I love working with metal like this.

Here are some caliper brackets that I fabbed up. They are 1/4" mild steel welded with my old Miller 135 MIG. Since then I sold that to my brother and picked up a Hobart 187.

Here are mine I did this past Sunday. I welded up a V Band to the catback pipe as well to my downpipe. I know what I did wrong (sort of) but I love running it super hot. I'm running on a Millermatic 135 set to 10, feed rate of 30, and gas at 25 psi. V band wasn't too bad as I didn't have any blow through. Further down that pipe I had cut off the neckdown and welded up 3" tube. I was blowing through it pretty bad. Had to turn it down a couple of times and refill the holes.

No pics of that cause they were so bad I had to grind them down. I love running it hot because it arcs better and I can feed a pretty nice deep weld and it penetrates 100%. I was experimenting with the push and pull method and I was blowing through on the push so I switched it up to pull. I was trying to find the medium where it made the bacon sizzling but I couldn't find it so I just ran it hot.

My technique for welding tube is to tack weld it and divide the weld area into 8ths. I would weld 1/8th, switch it over to the other side, weld another 1/8th and keep doing it till it was welded all around. I tried to keep the heat down this way but still the tube got too hot and I'm impatient. I can't sit around and wait for it to cool when I know there's welding to be done.

By the way, this is guesswork. I only say this because the first few 1/8th sections welded pretty well, then I started getting holes. Then for some reason, it wouldn't spark correctly and kept splattering even though I scrubbed and wiped it down with acetone. Beats me. I might have another go at it if I decide to take the ebay muffler off and weld on a Magnaflow. Definitely in the mind. Also, I have shit hand eye coordination and I can't hold a torch for shit. Feels like I have Parkinson's sometimes.

Welding from today. These beads are from my buddy Todd, who does my TIG welding. These are chromoly north/south bars for a 3-pc 1G crossmember that I built for a buddy.

If I can eventually learn to weld as well as Todd, I'll die a happy man. :)

Can someone please post a link to some of these welders you're using? Id like to start practicing but don't know what kind of welder would work.

All pics were done with a miller bobcat series welder, 7018 1/8 rod, don't recall thickness of the material though off hand.

I'm a private contractor and work on warehouse loading docks and equipment, pics are of the restraints used while loading the trailers. The third pic the end was a tack to hold the piece in place.

6010 Sch 40 Black Pipe

Same black pipe from home depot? I didn't know people welded that. Sch 40 the same stuff they build manifolds from?

This is mine and I love it. Don't get the miller diversion 165 though. Not as good and doesn't come with the foot pedal. By the time you get it you would of been better off getting the 180 which comes with a pedal.
Miller diversion 180
Miller Diversion 180 AC/DC TIG Welder Package 907460 | eBay

Depends on what you want. If you want to do aluminum you need AC/DC welder which are more money. If you want to do just stainless and regular steel you can get a DC machine.
(i'm talking tig welding)

This is a nice one, not sure what accessories it comes with though

Or eastwood has a inexpensive one.

What they have at Home Depot is usually plumbers pipe, which is brittle and weak, it will usually be painted blue on the very ends where it is cut, it is not designed to be welded.

What I am welding is carbon steel pipe, we call it black pipe because of the coating on the pipe which keeps it from rusting and corroding

This is a 5 inch exhaust vent, welded in position, out side, while snowing :)

Im curious why the width of the weld is exceding the material thickness by so much? By the width of those you would guess that is schedule 160 pipe. (more so your first pics) :)
