O Rielly Crankshaft Questions

I'm thinking of purchasing a new crank from O-Rielly's Auto, which comes from crankshaft rebuilders inc. Has anyone had experience purchasing cranks from these guys? I remember reading something about not getting a cut crank because the stock ones have a nitride coating or something. Can anyone comment on that?

Most people will comment how you shouldn't cut the crank; but very few will point to a specific instance of a cut crank failing.

For what it's worth the 2 rebuilds I've done I've purchased a good condition used crank and just had it polished. Because it's almost the same price as getting one cut.

How much power are you looking to make and at what red line? That may determine your comfort level w/ a cut crank.

also keep in mind that the large reman company will weld a crank that has had a bad spun bearing then grind it, this can make the crank weak , due to the over heating of the joural.

You will be better off pulling a good junkyard crank and having it polished. As mentioned the major crank rebuilders usually weld the journals and grind them back down to std.

I noticed dsm graveyard uses cranks from crank rebuilders inc on some of their motors. They even offer a warranty on one of there motors with said crank. I'm still debating it. That's a pretty good price from o-rielly's

Doesn't say they reweld only grind and polish. If you're getting one from them with standard size bearings i'd be leary if they're oversize bearings (for an undersize crank) i'd go for it if you're not looking to push the limits.

On the orielly's link, one of the packages says new crank kit and the other says re manufactured. What are the differences there?

Call and ask if you're a gambling man. I doubt any of them are new.
