2G noise in reverse

I'm having this real big problem as the title say when I put the car in reverse i hear this nasty noise coming from the back or at least thats how it seems. The noise stops right after i stop going backwards and start going forward. It only happens when in reverse.
Also i have no problem going into reverse it goes in easy.

I already searched and found one thread but nothing was ever solved.

Any of you guys ever had this problem?

i really need to figure this out im about to some new parts and i dnt want to get them and then find out i have a huge problem...

What does it sound like. Is it a whining noise, grinding? If it is a whining noise its perfectly normal, the reverse gears are spur bevel type which are always noisy, the forward gears in transmissions are spiral bevel which have a greater area of contact and mesh a lot better. If it is a grinding noise then you might be looking into something a lot more serious and should have it looked at.

Well if the noise is coming from the back you might wanna check your rear end. Maybe change the fluid? I somewhat doubt it though because it would most likely make noise going forward too. What kinda sound is it making exactly?

yeah it is a grinding noise and like i said it stops once i stop going backward and start moving forward. its a really loud grinding noise. i really dont know what it might be.

any ideas?

well i really have hit any bumps when i go in reverse so i really cant tell you that for sure and if you mean when im going forward then no it doesnt rattle

If it only does it in reverse then I would say it is your reverse drive gear. It might be worn from trying to put it in reverse when the speed of the engine and trans aren't matched because the reverse is a non-synchronized gear. But like that guy up there said, it might be in your rear end, unlikely but possible. The coast side of your ring gear could have something wrong with it. If it was anything else in the rear end it would almost definitely make noise in your forward gears also. Hope that helps some.

Hey, for the record I'm having the same problem. And I have ALWAYS had a rattle from the passenger rear on bumpy roads. I posted a while back with NO response.

It's more of a deep rumble...

as for the rattle in the back, my trunk springs were gone(trunk woulnt stay up)

and for the reverse, if it shifts smoothly, n does not gear out. have your rotors checked, they do grind on the pads

i may not be right but these i had before my rotors were whooopeddd.

those kind of troubles are really hard to solve out via internet cause we need to ear the sound and feel it who's needed to be right in the car. But a few things comes into my mind by your poor description of the trouble. If the sound come only by the rear end: might be a bent gear in your rear diff ( wich is hard to bent while you are in reverse ). might be a bad cv axle to wich as free play in it and moves badly when your are in reverse ( into forward it took his place and is always pushed by the inside ) . might be a bad dreiveshaft yoke too that are making the same result as the cv axle

Hey, FYI I fixed my problem...

My exhaust was rubbing against the differential and subframe. I adjusted the hangars so It didn't rub, and fixed it!!

put the car on all four jack stands, turn on the car and let it idle in reverse. Then you can go and check and hear under the car if it's the rear end, transfer case or transmission.

I'm having the same problem, I'll try post a video today. My car is making a scraping / grinding sound when driving in reverse. (It shifts into reverse just fine). It won't do it while rolling backwards, only when it's in gear. Here's the kicker though, it only does it when the car is first started, it won't do it after a couple minutes when it is warm. And it only happens when the car has been sitting in the rain. It won't do it in nice weather.

I know this is an old post but decided to share my story: I had a groan squeaking sound when in reverse only, when in drive it went away it seemed to get worse when I applied the brake in reverse, so naturally I ordered new rear brake pads and rotors... and I ended up, in the process of replacing the rear brakes, discovering the cause and resolving the issue, in my case it turns out a mud dauber decided to build a disgusting nest inside the hub and under the rotor, and a bit of this nest broke loose and was creaking groaning whenever I put the car in reverse, it was up aganist the heat shield and the hub/rotor this was on a fwd car.
