I just bought a 1992 awd talon last week finally got a 1g now my girl can drive the 2g anyways car seems to be in good shape and has good compresion. the thing is in any forward gear the car sounds like it is in reverse. That whyning noise bothers and scares me. I know that the syncros need to be replaced so im going to do that when i pull the engine in a few weeks but is there something elce wrong. My friends fwd 91 talon started doing it a while back but he has had no problems it still drives fine so i rulled out the transfer case or rear end plus it really sounds like the tranny. please help

It sounds to me like the spider gear is wearing out. I had the same thing happen to mine. It will break eventually.

Some of the things that could make your car make that noise are worn synchros, worn bearings, worn gears, low fluid, or old crappy fluid. I'd change the fluid before i tore it out. It could be simpe.

Yeah, that's definitely a bad thing. Helical cut gears (forward gears) should not make that sound.

If you have straight cut gears (a dogbox transmission), then that would be normal. The chances of that happening are next to none if the previous owner didn't mention it, though.
