OK I have researched but most answers about this question ends up being fixed by a bushing problem..my cables and bushings and clips all seem to be fine...well mostly..with my console looking down there is two cables..ok duh..on on the left(drivers side) and one just to the right of it..which one of these cables controls the 2nd 4th and reverse? I personally think my problem is more in the shifter itself which is a B&M short throw that was in the car when I bought it..I actually just bought the car yesterday CHEAP because of this shifting problem..From what I have read the B&M short throw shifter for my 97 Eclipse is not adjustable and it doesnt seem to be..but the bottom of the shifter shaft sometimes hits or rubs the metal of the stock shifter housing..I can some times get the car to go into 2nd and 4th..not reverse yet..This mostly happens with me just sitting in the car messing with the shifter going through the pattern...not while driving..I did notice today when I was able to get it in 2nd it would pop right back out with the slightest touch to the shifter..So basically I need to know and understand more how this shifter and these cables operate..what adjustments should I make or try to..what should I look for..which cable controls the gears I cant hit? Thanks..and please be gentle..this is my first post..

The problem comes with how the B&M sits lower on the pivot and the bottom of the shifter is longer than stock. It gets wedged up against the shifter base causing it to not go into gear, because the base is quite literally stopping it.

I don't know why it happens in some 2Gs and not the others. I do know that at some point Mitsubishi did reissue a shifter base on a new part number, so I think this may have to do with it. Resolution? Maybe ensure that this is the issue you are having and see how much material you may need to shave off the bottom to make it clear.

Move the shifter back and forth like your going 3rd to 4th, see the cable that moves? You need to loosen the locking nut on that cable and twist the BUSHING part of it INWARDS, essentially shortening how far the shifter has to move to get into 2nd, 4th, reverse.

Corrected. Forgot 2g's don't have adjusters.
