Hello, I am a Nissan/ FairladyZ owner gone DSM! I had a very nice 04 350z Track model I dumped my heart and sole into but after two years I got tired of it and wanted to get in the boosted scene! I thought about a 240sx but a old friend of mine just bought a Evo and had his 99 GST 2G sitting in the garage for the past 6 months. I ended up buying the car a few weeks ago for a steal and now fixing all the little problems with it now. I have done some research but still needing more help. I try and use Google search but need some more insight.

The car is a 1999 DSM GST 2G 420A engine. I am having two problems, one being fuel and the other being idle. They are probably both being caused by the same problem.

OK, here we go. The car takes about 4 seconds of cranking to start, if somehow it does start after a second of cranking the RPM's jump up to about 1000k rpm and then will die unless I put my foot on the gas.

Once the car is started the idle jumps between 300rpm and 1100rpm. If I let it sit for over a minute it will usually kill itself. and then I gotta start cranking it again.

While the car is sitting idling, once I put the car in gear, pull away there is a huge amount of white smoke. Smells like gas and there really is quite a bit of smoke.
Power wise seems to be fine, turbo spools up nicely, pulls hard and already won some races :).

Another thing I might add is after I finally get the car started it smells like gas very bad. I have been trying to find the fuel smell and I believe I traced it down to the fuel regulator?. I know it is not the fuel filter because it is fine after I replaced it and the smell is by the fuel regulator area anyways.
The car is also throwing a P1104 code. It is a real code as I have unhooked the battery and reset the ECU numerous times since I got the car to verify it is a real code.

So what do you guys think? Some people online have had a Coolant Temperature Sensor failure. They say to unplug it and see if it runs better since it effects idle? Some have said a failed EGR valve and to take it off and block it completely. I have checked the O-Rings on the injectors and they are fine. There is also no vacuum leaks.

Well enough typing here is a picture of the fuel regulator, can I rebuild this or at least clean it? Since the car has been sitting for such a long time. Could it be clogged?

Here is a little more about the car below, the maintenance part below I have done in the past two weeks.

Car
- Manual Boost Controller.
- Evo Turbo.
- 550CC Injectors.
- Walbro 255 Pump.
- Greddy BOV.
- HKS Turbo Timer.
- Megan Racing Full Exhaust.

Maintenance
- Fuel Filter Change.
- Air Filter.
- Oil Change/ Filter.
- NGK BPR7ES/ Wires OK.
- Boost Leak Test ( Checks out OK! )
- Seafoam threw vacuum line, teaspoon in each cylinder, tad bit in oil and rest threw gas tank. Smoked like a chimney! LOL.

I hope to hear some good feedback, signing off and going to celebrate the rest of my birthday tonight haha. Thanks guys!

Not to be an ass, but the GSTs and GSXs come with the 4G63, not the 420A. Your idle surge can be caused by a few things. Just do a search on here, and there should be more than enough information to get your car 100%. Good luck to you.

I am sorry I am not accurate on the engine bay, while I had the car at Autozone the fellow there asked about the car since I was getting a fuel filter and he noted it was a 420a engine. I was going off his word, I am new to the DSM world so forgive me please. Here is a picture of the engine bay if it helps.

No worries man, we were all new at some point. But thats definitely a 4g63. :thumb:

BLT?^ I was just thinking, since it is white smoke could it be a blown head gasket?

Boost leak test should tell you about your idle. As for the head gasket pull your dipstick. Check and see how your oil looks.

BLT= Boost Leak Test. Pressurizing the charge piping and spraying with soapy water to find any leaks. It's always good to do, but pretty irrelevant in this case. If you suspect the regulator to be leaking, it's most likely at the outlet line. There should be a rubber hose coming off the bottom of the regulator that is tied into the stock metal return line. Check that area for leaks and tighten any clamps you find.

However, white smoke sounds like a bad head gasket to me. Do you notice the coolant level dropping at all? I would run a compression and leak down test, both of which would require a compression tester, air compressor, and a bit of DIY work.

Here's an awesome article on compression and leak-down testing:

2G Turbo DSM Boost Leaks -How to test and fix

Welcome! :)

If you thought it was a 420a, I would try a BLT before you throw a head gasket at it.

Memorizing engine codes has nothing to do with being a good mechanic. Give the guy a break.

do you think if he said BLT was fine by some one else we should belive him? LOL

My apologies, I didn't read that part. But still, no need to discredit someone because they were misinformed by someone else. Hand me a Honda and say it has a B18, I'll say it has a B18. Ignorance =/= incompetence.

OP- Definitely do a boost leak test yourself if you haven't. One of the biggest rules of buying a new DSM: Don't believe the previous owner! LOL

Well some warm welcomes and not so warm welcomes I suppose. I have stated I am new to the turbo scene and DSM scene. The first thing I thought of was a boost leak so I did a boost leak test. There was only a small leak which I fixed. Sorry I didn't understand " BLT "
I just went and got a compression test from a friend which I will try in the morning and go from there. We will see how good of compression I have and if there is a bad head gasket.

Questions
- Coolant Temperature Sensor? Is it OK to unplug it while I have the car running to see if that is the cause?
- EGR Valve? Are they known for failing in these cars? Should I block it off?
- Fuel Regulator? Clogged? OK to take apart and clean?

What exactly are you using for tuning? If the answer is nothing you would be running rich from the 550s. However the FPR not being set properly will cause problems as well.

As for your idle problem, a surging idle is usually the ISC. It's located on your throttle body. If your tubing solution is ECMlink you can enable ISC emulation and delete the ISC all together with a block off plate.

The best tutorial for trouble shooting this problem is terry's fast idle, you can find it easily enough.
