For the first time since I bought my car, I'm tempted to set it on fire and enjoy the show.

That tool for installing the keepers just kept giving me problem. First I smashed a brand new valve stem seal (and there are none at any local Advance Auto or Autozone) then this...

Where'd the valve go???

There it is!

So now the head is off too. I really didn't want to have to do that, but that stupid valve decided to drop into the cylinder as I tried to get the keepers in.

Now that the head is off, I may see if I can track down some new valves. This engine must have some miles on it. It has a ton of carbon build up.

I decided to ditch the cruise control today. At first I planned on just moving it out of the road, but then I started thinking about how often I use it. I don't remember the last time. So it got ditched and I modified the cable to work. I'll probably order a non-cruise control one eventually, but this works for now.

I also decided to completely ditch the emissions stuff. It cleans up the space above the intake manifold pretty well. I still have the fuel pressure solenoid and the MAP sensor above the intake manifold, so it won't look too empty.

And this is the engine bay as it sits now. Basically just the short block, turbo, and transmission.

At least the valve cover is shiny.

I don't think I'm going to finish by Friday night. I'm going to call off work tomorrow for Saturday and possibly Sunday if they have me scheduled.

Now I just need to track down some valves (preferably SS ones), a headgasket, and a new valve stem seal.

Were you using the Toyo Tool for the valves? Great tool but never used it with the head on the engine.

that sucks, well at least it got you to do some mild upgrades

oh, a late word of advice... make sure the piston is at the top or the valve will go straight down into the cylinder :)

Use a wire wheel to clean the valve faces and the backside of the valve, Dont be afraid to bring each piston upto top dead center and clean the tops off too. Also maybe time to think about timing belt job too.

Looking good so far, I like the color of the VC and it's a shame about the tool not working well for you. What did you do to modify the throttle cable to work without the cruise control box?

I bent the cable holder where it comes out of the firewall. Then I made a bracket to hold the throttle cable. I can stomp on the gas and it seems secure. I'll buy an actual non-cruise control cable here shortly, but I just wanted to get rid of it now while I was working on everything.
