Newbie 6 bolt build

pros vs cons

is it do able by a novice? i have no mechanic skills what so ever is this even possible for me to do alone ? i have basically any and every tool imaginable but limited work space.

currently shopping around for a 6bolt block and head to start with
getting them bare with no internals.
what do i need to be able to run this in my 1996 TSi FWD

any recommendations on aftermarket parts and where to obtain them?
any recommendations on good machine shops in the New England area that can refinish the block and head for me?

I would suggest keeping the 2g head and just getting the bolt holes in the head bored larger to accept the 12mm 6-bolt head bolts. Other than that it's a fairly easy job as long as you have the right tools and are somewhat mechanically inclined.

What are your power goals?

Yes, when i first got my dsm. I had no mechanical knowledge. I just finished my secoout nd swap. They will make a mechanic out of you. Don't cheap out on parts. And i ran into trouble the first because i tried to go to big to soon. Build it back tp stock get it running right then upgrade. Always Always run timing covers. And this got me through both builds. Any issue you have go to Google and search "dsm (then your issue)" and you will probably ask few questions. Everything is just about covered somewhere. Take your time with it. And i built dropped it in and tuned my car myself so its not as complicated as it seems. If you have your old engine take it apart and you will learn alot.

Might as well get 3 layer headset and arps. I used both chilton and Hayes as each are a little different and are great together also vfaq is pretty handy.

I've built two engines and have very few post on sites so i promise most of your questions, are detailed out somewhere.

not intending on going too crazy but honestly i'm not even sure. the cars gonna be my daily driver i just want it to be a fun toy of a daily driver. i'm new to the dsm scene thanks for the link to that thread a lot of useful info there i appreciate it. i am not mechanically inclined what so ever.

I wasn't a mechanic either, but now i can put in my engine in about an hour, i can pull it in two. One thing about dsms there are alto of do it yourself-ers like you and i. And there are people all over this forum with worlds of knowledge and tricks that are happy to help. An eclipse was my first project. And now i feel confident enough to work on most anything. just go step by step, it seems like alot as a whole but broken down. There terribly simple. They will however let you know really quick when something isn't right, or cheap parts it doesn't like.

Well then just take it slow and research/ask any questions you have. They are fairly simple engines to build, but also easy to royal mess up. If you don't have any expereince building an engine at all, I'd try to find a stock 6-bolt that has no obvious damage. Then take it to a shop and have them inspect it for you. If you truly want to build the engine yourself, then make sure you have a good set of feeler gauges and a Chilton. It's also good to find a machine shop that has experience with 4g63 engines. Call some local shops and ask them "Do you guys work on 4g63 engines?". If they have to ask what that is, don't take it to them.

any one know of any machine shops in the new england area that are good with this engine? going to be calling around but a heads up on the good and the bad would be awesome
