There's a complete writeup for a 1g..............................



Basically, there's four wires to the fuel pump, ground the pump to chassis, power is from battery fused to 30a relay to the stock fuel pump wire.
Essencially the stock fuel pump power wire becomes the turn on for the larger gauge direct power wire.

Simple?

If you're running out of fuel with the stock pump, then yes it will help to put in a bigger pump, even without a rewire. Will your new/bigger pump be working at its full potential? NO But it will (of course) be able to flow more than the stock pump.
