I'm in the process of repairing a snapped HVAC temperature control cable and while I was looking behind the dash it looked like the blend door lever had something missing on it. Is it supposed to have a return spring to shut the door? I figure the cable just pulls it open and a spring closes it or maybe an electric motor does that instead?

The door isn't easy to rotate so I can't imagine it shutting on its own when the cable releases tension. I don't want to put it back together to find out it's still busted. Just wanna know if I'm going crazy here or not.

The blend doors are completely manually operated. The cable attached to each knob opens and closes the doors depending on which way you turn it. No springs are in there. If the door will not close by hand, something is in there preventing it. That's the only thing possible.

Not sure what exactly your asking. The blend door is controlled by a cable from the knob. You turn the knob more red and the door opens more and more. You turn it toward the blue and it closes. There should be no reason that it needs to close itself.

Okay that's good then that nothing is missing. I'm asking because cables are good at pulling, not at pushing. I don't see how it'll be able to push the arm shut after I turn the knob. I can open and close it by hand but it does take some force. It almost feels stuck and then wham it suddenly flings open.

Sounds like the cables are binding up inside the plastic somehow then. I think you should get some from a salvage yard and swap them out to see if that works out. You can test the salevage yard ones before pulling them too.

I don't know how to get to the flapper way behind the dash without actually pulling the dash which I don't want to do. My local junkyard also doesn't have anymore DSMs which kind of stinks. The cars basically vanished from existence here. I resorted to pulling apart the lower dash and took out the hvac unit for a better look. I wonder if the binding is what snapped the cable in the first place. I don't know how it happened as it was broken when I got it.

I got the blend door to open and close a lot more freely now. I put the key in and cranked up the fan and a bunch of debris shot out the vents. However, I fixed the cable and got it back together and now it works fine setting the temperature. I figure that someone broke the cable a long time ago and the door just sat in one position and got clogged from it.

As far as I am aware, my build thread might have the most comprehensive pictures to pulling the dash and HVAC out. Feel free to look if you are curious on anything.
