Need help with making my exhaust sound good

I have a 1991 1g dsm and I really don't like the way the exhaust sounds. I have a 3" apexi n1 downpipe with cat bypass and the rest of the system is stock. My exhaust sounds ok after 2500rpm but I want a nice clean sound until I start boosting. I want to keep the downpipe if possible sense its already on there. Any ideals?

There are 5 video clips of me at the track at the end of this video. This is with the full 3" punishment exhaust, 14b.

Also I missed the W in whp. Sorry for the confusion. I thought he was saying 2.5" was enough to handle stock hp, which obviously wouldn't make too much sense.

It's all in the resonators!
Take the muffler off an Apexi N1 system and it sounds nearly the same.

I have a full turboback for sale that sounds badass(atleast I think so )PM me if you might be interested. Its all catless(flanged for the stock cat) and non resonated and sounds badass, also has less than 1k miles on it.

I've had the HKS Carbon Ti with all cats and resonators removed and thought it sounded badass but could have been a tad louder.. It was loud as fawk though at WOT.

For performance alltogether, I'd say apexi n1 is the best way to go for this.

My talon was very quiet driving around but really screamed the sound of the 4g63 at WOT. I miss it just thinking about it.

or just get a 3in. turbo back to a 4-5in. tip. i have HKS. and i like the way mine sounds. my buddy has apexi N1 3in. turbo back to a 4 in. tip and i think his sounds amazing!!

Short of dumping your wastegate... it's not going to be THAT much louder at WOT no matter what.

I don't need it louder at WOT, my main concern is I want it quite when I'm just cruising around.

Weld in a muffler in the midpipe. It don't get much quieter than that. I've disconnected my rear muffler in the past and ran the mid-muffler only when I want it aggressive sounding. Otherwise the combo of Thermal R&D rear muffler and Borla 5" bullet muffler makes it boring quiet.

The quietest set up will be:

1.) Chambered muffler
2.) Resonator prior to a straight through muffler
3.) Resonator prior to a chambered muffler.

I had the Apexi N1 exhaust and now i have the Megan racing exhaust. I like the Apexi exhaust better. (both were/is turbo back)

Megan Racing sounds mean after i start boosting.

get an srs catback from ebay, they are better quality then a 500+ dollar apexi n1. N1's are extremely notorious for blowing out the backside of the muffler, happened to me and many other users on this forum. AN exhaust is an exhaust is an exhaust, there are small differences between all exhausts. Basically you want something that is 3 inches, stainless steel and straight through design. That way you get durability, very little back pressure, and nothing that will hold back the flow of the exhaust. I have a 500 dollar n1 that i have had for about a year and a half and it only lasted about 8 months before it blew out. I will be UPGRADING to a 250 dollar srs catback very soon.

also you can place a cherry bomb glass-pack ( i think thats what they are called) where the cat used to be, that way you get a resonator of sort and still get rid of the catalytic converter, they are about the same length as well!

For a 1g? If you can find a cheaper 3" exhaust on ebay then get it. Exhaust pipes are exhaust pipes. Just buy the cheapest 3" mandrel bent exhaust that you can find and you will be happy with the way it sounds. Trust me.

Never heard of this. I tried searching and found no problems....I have an N1 that has quite a few miles on it and I wouldn't mind reading these reviews if you can post the threads?

EDIT: Just read a few things that make me realize it's probably mostly from the can hitting bumps and causing the welds to separate. I'll have to take a closer look at mine to see if it has any damage.

Ahhh, yeah that would definitely do it. Another problem that many DSM owners have is short drive times. When the vehicle isn't driven for more than a few miles at a time, the water coming from the engine can't be evaporated out of the exhaust well enough to prevent this from happening...something to keep in mind if you guys are having problems with mufflers rusting through.
