Need help selecting main bearings for 1g 7 bolt 4G63 (94 Laser)

I have my 7 bolt block all tore down for a stock rebuild. Looking in the manual it says to order the new bearings by using the identification marks on the bottom of the block and the colored dots on the crankshaft. Since I'm reusing my old crank and it has over 130k on it there are no colored dots left.

I also understand that the bearings themselves have the number written on them. Looking at my thrust bearing for instance, it has 3B on the bottom half and 2L on the top half engraved in it. It also has the #3 stamped on both halves in black ink. I'm pretty sure that I go by the stamped # but can anyone confirm this? I think I see why everyone builds 6 bolt engines.

After alot of research I found that you do indeed use the # stamped on the bearing in black ink. Just in case anyone needs this info for future reference.

Somewhat on-topic, I'll be doing a mild 2G street rebuild in the spring. I have a new 2g crank and am looking for a 4G64 to put it in. (Yes, long rods, etc.)

Since the late 2G's had improved, Evo-like thrust bearings, I also wonder about how to select main bearings, especially for using this crank in a non-native block.

Anybody offer any advice?

Since you are starting with a fresh crank it should have the colored dots on it which represent the sizes of the journals. Look in the manual and match up the colors with the stamp on the bottom of the block that shows the diameter of the blocks main bearing bore. Like it says in the link below it's not uncommon for a crank to use several different size bearings.

If I end up with a early 7 bolt 4G63 block, does anyone know if the late 2G thrust bearings still fit it? Seems that'd be a good way for a lot of folks to improve the reliability of the earlier 7 bolts...

UPDATE: I've been told by a DSM rebuilder that early 2G blocks won't accept modified late 2G main bearing sets. I'd still like to get some other confirmation...
