I have a 2g AWD talon, I want to pull the block and build it. I see a lot of 6 bolt swaps out there, however I like plug and play, and I can't stand messy wiring or sketchy swaps. Am I making a mistake by just building my stock engine? I am looking to go about .30 over, new crank, rods, bearings, pistons and I have a built 7 bolt head for it. I'm looking to make around 500hp and keep the car daily drivable. Give me your input and advice please! Thanks guys!

well to start off you can not bore a 4g block .30 that is a bit over a 1/4 inch (.250)

Now you can go .030.

WHy .030? most go .020 on the first rebuild. Unless you already have a set of .030 pistons or the block is already .020 over.

Deck the block

Pick a flavor of H beam rods, research what forged pistons to use
Balance the rotating assembly

Why replace the crank? worn thust face? spin a rod bearing?

First off, Thanks for your info, it's greatly appreciated! Yes I meant .030 over, since it's the first re build and I'm going to buy a nice set of forged pistons anyway, I thought why not go .030 over. The car has 130k and runs fine. So there are no crank issues that I am aware of. This is my first DSM, so I am just seeking advice on the build. I want to make around 500hp, and I want to make sure I have the internal engine components to handle it!! So what would you advise me to do? Just deck the block and head, h beam rods, and forged pistons? Anything else? I also would like to install cams, I love the sound of a nasty 4g63 cam lope!

Once the engine is out, and the tear down has begun, get the head off and the oil pan, then grab a dial indacator and measure your crank end play.

Your Cam choice should be for what the end use of the car will be. Not the hottest cam on the market.

Get your supporting mods in line too, WB, injectors and tune.

Get yourself a nice set of Kelford 272's for your head and beehive springs. You will also need titanium retainers. Also have the machine shop do a nice port and polish on the head! Leave your stock crankshaft and Manley makes a nice set of forged pistons.

Kelford272 and a port and polish? Thats a bit of overkill for a 500hp build.

He could go BC272 no port and polish, and what he saves on the price diffrence on the cams and spring and the savings on the PnP have enough for Link.... And still be knocking on 500HP

BC from what I have heard is a horrible cam. Do it once and be done with it. That way when he is ready to go bigger he can!

Sweet, thanks for the input. So far the car has the following mods
- competition valve job, radius cuts on the intake and exhaust ports, and the head was decked.
- Greddy 18g turbo, from a Subaru.
- ECU Link
- AEM wide band
- Greddy cat back exhaust
- 880cc precision injectors
- eBay header- I will put the stock exhaust Mani back on after I finish the port and polish job
- turbo xs manual boost controller
- turbo smart BOV
- large aftermarket side mount inter cooler
- dejon lower hard piping
- dejon air intake

I hate the huge ass maf sensor, I'd like to eliminate it as well, but I don't know how or with what? I am also going to build custom upper hard piping with HKS flange, bc I love the flutter BOV sound.

Again, any advice is greatly appreciated. Please comment and help me to stay in the right direction, I just don't want to waste money on things if I don't need them.

there is no reason to do a 6bolt swap plenty of people run 7 bolts both early and late models and have no issues. crankwalk is way overplayed :thumb: so your stock block will be good

You do not need a custom piping kit for the hks bov. When you order your fmic kit tell them you want it flanged for hks. Also, as far as the maf is concerned you can either run speed density or a gm maf set up. Get rid of the ebay header and go with a fp race manifold. Also what turbo do you plan on running because I do not think that 18g will get you to your goals. Go with a hx35 and a bep housing. Get yourself some bigger injectors as well. You will need to add a boost gauge to your gauge setup.

Ok sounds good, My intercooler is rated for 500hp so that is why i was going to just build my own upper piping with the hks setup. I think ill go with the gm maf setup, it seems to be pretty simple. I plan to max out the 18g then go bigger, I just havent decided what model yet. I do have a boost guage, just forgot to list it!

That is awesome info! Exactly what I wanted to hear!

To add, The car has a stock clutch, and transmission. The tranny shifts fine and has no issues so I plan to leave it alone, for now. The clutch, I dont expect to last much longer. I have looked around at them, im thinking ACT. I want to drive the car on the street so what do you guys reccomend?
