Hello fellow dsm community!!

A couple months ago I purchased a 1997 gst. Can’t say im very satisfied considering 2 week after buying I had this horrible tap/knock coming from the engine.

Iv decided it would be a good idea to juSt get it rebuilt.

I’m really looking for tips on this rebuild. Lucky enough the labor will be free. my brother is a skilled tree shade mechanic with over 100 rebuilds under his belt. It will be his first time rebuilding on this 4g63 7 bolt.

I have about a 2500 cash spending limit.

Glad your rebuilding instead of scrapping! Don't skimp on your bearings etc...I had mine at the machine shop over the winter and they checked everything(had a bad crank) tanked everything, polished up my new crank, polished valve surfaces etc and was out the door for less than 800. Mine also had a nasty knock and prev owner insisted it was ghost knock, turned out #2 rod bearings were basically gone. Good luck and if theres questions...look around here...lots of knowledge and great ppl here

What tests have you performed to know that it requires a rebuild? Tapping knocking etc could be several things.

No tests are really needed at this point, the car has 200000 miles and I have the money and someone who knows their way around

Iv taken it to several people and all have said the same thing. Rod knock.

Iv already taken the engine apart and sent it to the machine shop to be pressure checked, head rebuild, cylinder hone, crank looks like it’s taken some damage. He said it looks like they will be taking -10 off and said I’d be in need of some 10 under berrings. Or however much was taken off. I found some metal pieces in the pan upon Disassembling. Il try to post more pictures.

They guy that I bought it from said the Trush berring was wore. And he put a new set in. With new clutch and main seal.

I plan on a full rebuild. New pistons, rods, rings, gaskets from top to bottom.

As far as I can tell nothing is broken and I don’t see where these metal pieces came from.

SOMETHING was broken in that motor or you wouldn't have "trophies' in the oil pan. Have the shop look it over REAL good because those pieces weren't just hanging out there because it was warm and fuzzy.......

True, Iv went over the engine 10 times with no broken pieces I can see. I’m thinking whatever those pieces are that’s what was broken before. He replaced it and didn’t get it all out of the engine.

Well lets hope. Get a second and third set of eyes on the little pieces and the motor and components to see if it can be traced down. Hate to see a good motor build go haywire over them. :thumb:

Il give it a full go over again tonight to see what those little pieces can be. They aren’t very big pieces

@Brettmclayto, can you post up a clearer picture of those pieces so others might be able to see what they are? The other pic is a little blurry.
NM, looks like you did before I got my reply posted, thanks!

Brass....and appears to be a circular pattern. I say old thrust bearing pieces, anyone else please chime in and lets get some idea of what these are.

See if they, in any way, look close to the new thrust bearing. They are just pieces but should be able to match it up to something new. Is your block a split thrust bearing with it only being up in the block but not on the main cap?

I’m at work at the moment so when I get a chance I’ll take some more pictures and send how the old/new berrings look. (The ones he said were replaced recently before the tear down)

I’d seen some little metallic shaving on the old/new thrust berrings. Il show pictures later.

Ok fellow dsm community! Iv retreaved a couple more pieces from the oil pan on these “trophy’s” I have. Some of them look like they have oil holes through the side of them. Iv went over all the parts again and have found nothing broken. All pieces of the berrings are in place.
