My 2g 6 Bolt Build

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

For those of you who followed this whole build I feel I owe it to you to give you an update.

The motor spun a bearing just shy of 6000 miles.
After a complete tear down, all 4 cylinders looked horrible. Looked to me as if the PTW clearances werent right, my machinst agreed. The pistons were too loose.
Also, while tearing the head down I noticed that 2 of the valves in the same cylinder had absolutely no carbon build up on the back of them.
I took the head to my machinst, he said that cylinder was running on low compression because those 2 valves werent seating properly and all the carbon was being burnt off during combustion. So basically I got a friday 4p.m. motor.
What a headache...but on the bright side, I made 300+whp on 3 cylinders haha
So I bought a spare motor and pulled the rods and crank out of it. Bought a set of 2g NPR pistons and rings and started all over.
So this build is a little different..
I used the same block bored 30 over.
2g pistons on 1g rods with arp bolts
acl rods and mains along with arp mains
I had the head mildly ported, the valves seated properly, 272 comp cams, and upgraded to a used FP green internally gated with an external 02 dump.
The motor is done being built, im in the process of fixing dumb little things while the motor is out.
This time around I built the bottom end and head myself, so hopefully I have better luck this time.
And sorry, I didnt take any pictures this time around.
Im planning on upgrading to link v3 and getting rid of the hallman boost controller and switching over to an electronic boost solenoid.
Any questions feel free to ask.
Sorry for waiting so long to update. The car has been stored the past two years while I decided what I wanted to do. Part it out or give it another run?
Obviously I chose to give it another run! :thumb:

Thanks for reading..

Its been awhile since Ive posted in this thread, figured I would share some new photos and upgrades.

Head port and polished, comp 272's, aem cam gears
Block bored .030, NPR 2g pistons on 1g rods
ARP bolts and studs
AEM Fuel Rail
Relocated the FPR
Link v3 w/ SD
FP manifold
FP green @ 24psi on 93 pump
Evo 9 seats
Powder coated the I/C pipes black
Soon to be:
Shep stage 2 FWD trans w Quaife LSD (last one they are building)
DSS axles
SB kevlar clutch and pp

Any guess as to what kind of number I will put down?
Im going to the dyno shortly, see who can guess the closest!
I have about 2000 miles on the motor, and its pulling pretty strong.

Heres a couple pics of the latest build, the trans should be arriving tom!
These pics are from before switching to SD and shaving/powder coating the IM.

Just an FYI - Eric and I aren't going to come out and help you install the shifter cable bracket this time LOL

Looks nice! You'll love the Quaife

HAHAHAHA

That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever needed help with LOL
Lets just keep that between the 3 of us
Actually, this time I took a picture before removing it...:shhh:

Thanks, I built this one myself. No one touched it but my local machinst and me. So if it breaks, I have no one to blame but myself.
I cant wait to see the difference with the Quaife, Ive been driving this car for 14 years with an open differential...
Im just hoping it will get me into the 12's

I got everything back together and she's running again.
Once I started the car I couldnt get it in gear, I adjusted the master cylinder rod and I think Im good now. I havent driven it yet because it was raining.
Few more pictures, enjoy!

Well I definitely need some practice launching now with a LSD.
I bought a set of 225 hankook vrs3's for my stock wheels to run at the track.
Hopefully they will help.

Im also going to have my tuners setup my EBC through link to run lower boost in 1st and 2nd gears to help with wheel spin. Then crank it up in the rest of the gears.

Im currently looking for a set of, 2 or 4, rx7 fd wheels to put some nice sticky tires on.

The tires on my racing harts are pirelli p-zeros, I should have put some street radials on my 18's. I will one day, I have 4 sets of wheels between my 2 cars. Tires are WAY too expensive.

Right now Im trying to figure out what mod to do to my car next...I used to have a VIS OEM CF hood, and I liked it a lot. I might get one again...any other suggestions?

If you're looking for 2 wheels, why go with the RX7 wheels when they weigh so much? I'd suggest the Rota Slipstreams if you're looking for a cheap, light drag wheel. I run a 15x7 (I think) for my slicks. They clear the stock AWD 2 piston calipers.

I have 4 sets of wheels for my one car LOL (well, if you consider the pair of slicks a 'set')

You seem to have all the basics done (supporting mods, tuning capability, turbo), so if you want to go for a visual mod, now would be the time.

I looked up those wheels, thanks for the idea.
What brand and size tires do you have on your drag wheels?
Why 15x7 and not 15x8?

This is what I was looking at...

SLIPSTREAM 15X8 5X114.3 40mm offset
With Hoosier R6 P245/50ZR15 tires

Do you think this will fit and clear gsx calipers?

I'm not positive if they're 7" or 8" wide. I got them from a friend when he switched to an AWD chassis, so I just took them and didn't pay much attention. I do have to find that out though next time I'm home.

I'm running M&H drag slicks. Again, I don't know the size off hand, but I'm pretty sure they're a 24.5" tire.

Tires sized in inches confuse the hell out of me

Im assuming the setup I posted should fit with no problem. I read that you want a 40mm offset with 8" wide wheels. And the 50 height shouldnt be a problem because of the 15" wheel....

That's the way most slicks are measured is in inches. It's just about how tall the tire is.

What makes you want to go with a road racing tire (R6)? What type of tire are you looking for - drag, road racing, autox, street use?

I think a 245 will fit with a +40 offset. I'm guessing you'll probably have between 5 and 8mm of clearance to the rear knuckle with that setup, which shouldn't be an issue. Yes, I think it'd clear the GSX caliper.

I'm probably going home this weekend so I'll check the size of my setup and post it up.

Sorry I didnt notice that wasnt a drag tire. I want strict drag tires.

Hoosier makes drag radials, sold at tire rack, but the sizes are odd.
They go from P225/50R15 to P275/50R15, with no sizes inbetween. I thought 8" wide wheels normally use 245 tires, are slicks sized differently?

Brian,
The more I read the more confused I get...

Im thinking rota 15x8 wheels with
These slicks
Mickey Thompson ET Sport Compact Drag Slicks 3015 - SummitRacing.com
and these tubes ( do I need these?)
Mickey Thompson Racing Tubes 9553 - SummitRacing.com

I honestly don't know much about Hoosier drag slicks. I've been happy with the M&H's and have known a bunch of other people who have, so I'd at least recommend looking into them. The company and people you talk to (possibly even the owner) are very helpful, super friendly, and will get you exactly what you need and will work best.

If you do want Hoosiers, I'd suggest contacting them or Tire Rack as they should be able to tell you if what you want is available.

Hey man, I really enjoyed reading your build. I laughed when I saw the post about shepard transmission doing the last FWD tranny for you. I just sent mine out last week, I guess they figured they could do just one more for me.

Are you doing a stage 2 FWD or a stage 1?
I was told mine was the last stage 2 fwd they were doing because they no longer could find HD gears. In fact, I had to buy a used HD 4th gear from TMZ just to finish the build...

I'm pretty sure mine are tubeless.

I would like tubeless but it seems like every tire I found requires a tube..

I ran into a new problem after installing all this.

Mines just the stage 1. They said it was the last one, so I guess we got the last two FWD trannys from shep! :hellyeah:

Did you install a new master and/or slave, or just have to redo it from it sitting so long?

When we bled Eric's clutch system recently (new master and slave), this is how we did it.

1. Gravity bled the system - open slave bleeder, fill up clutch reservoir and let fluid flow into line (make sure to keep reservoir topped off)
2. Bled slave cylinder like brake calipers - open bleeder, push down pedal by hand slowly and steadily (making sure it doesn't fall), close bleeder, pull pedal up slowly and steadily, repeat

Not sure if you're looking at the Slipstreams, but I don't see them in a 15x8 size. Just 15x7.

As for the MT's/tubes, I'd probably talk to someone at Summit and see what they say. Or create a new thread in the Drag forum and ask.
