1990 tsi. awd 5spd. 8 months ago was the last time this car had seen a repair or upgrade. No issues up till 2 weeks ago. Ive done my research on this new problem and couldn't find an answer. After starting the car it misfires really bad, check engine light comes on, I hear a relay toggling over and over where the ecu is located. If i give it throttle at any amount of load and the car will rev sporadically, It'll crackle and pop, sounds like the Macy firework show. If i try to drive it this way the car misfires and barely accelerates under any amount of load, sounds like a firework show, jerks back and forth, check engine light comes on and off, etc... This will go on for 15-20 minutes and all of a sudden everything will go back to a normal condition. No check engine light, no misfire, no crackle and pop. As if nothing was wrong. This happens ALL THE TIME. What can cause the car to run like SH*t for 15 minutes and suddenly run fine again? Shut the car off. Let it sit for a while and the process starts all over again. Thanks in advance

ECU might be the culprit.

Check the main connections to the ECU first - might have some loose connections ... but check with the negative cable on the battery disconnected.

That ticking you hear behind the radio is the injector relays constantly resetting themselves .. that is caused by leaking caps on the ECU since they can't hold a charge anymore.

You might have some sensor drivers on the ECU ready to go bad on you.

If that's the original 1990 ECU, you got a 22 yr old ECU that's ready to be replaced.
