Minimum upgrades needed with turbo swap

My 14b needs to be replaced and I wanted to use a 16g. If i keep my boost at a stock level will i need to upgrade anything? Injectors, fuel pump, any type of management?

My reason is i don't have the money to do all sorts of mods right now but will in less than a year, so when the time comes i want to have an upgraded turbo already. Basically I want to know if I can use a 16g as a direct replacement?

You can use the 16g as a direct replacement with none of the supporting fuel mods as long as you keep the boost level low.

Yes, you can.

However, once it goes on you're going to want to turn up the boost and make more power without the supporting mods and then you'll be back here asking questions about "why doesn't my car work right?".

Just put the 16G on the shelf until you get the supporting mods.

All turbos produce the same amount of power at the amount of air flow (CFM, lbs/min, m^3/s) irregardless of the turbo. Whether the turbo flows 15 lbs/min at 14 psi or 12 psi is irrelevent to the psi, the power output from the engine is the same for 15 lbs/min.

if he's just using the car to get around town than it perferct for a direct replacement since stock boost is 9lbs. so.. there shouldn't be any problems unless you have an auto

Wouldn't a smaller turbo have to work much harder to create that same airflow though? Therefore creating much hotter air and less power?

Thanks the the feedback. The car is my daily driver and no i wont get an itch to turn up the boost, never did it on the 14b cause I know whats needed before making power. My 14b was bought used and is barely building boost anymore adn leaks oil, I dont want to buy a new 14b when in 6 months i plan on making some power.

Believe me i wont be back asking questions, I dont post a lot but I read tons and have lots of hands on experience with dsms other then my own, just couldnt find much about this subject.

With the 16g I'm also getting a datalogger, TRE budget transmission rebuild and a 2g exhaust manifold and I already have a 2.5" downpipe. Ill also be doing lots of maintanence (timing belt, gaskets, water pump, and getting the interior cleaned up with new 1g eclipse seats) <---nothing to go fast really just a little prep and getting back to working right.








Oh ya i already have the boost gauge.

If you don't already have one (didn't see it in your profile) invest in a accurate boost guage so you can be sure what boost you're running.

A smaller turbo spools faster (i.e. provides the amount of air flow sooner) and may not flow as much as a larger which may spool slower but provide more flow. When speaking of turbos your really should be talking about CFM versus pressure ratio:

((Desired Boost Pressure + Atmosphere Pressure) - (Post-turbo intercooling and piping Loss))/((Atmosphere Pressure) - (Pre-turbo filter and piping loss))

Though usually it could be roughly equated to for 9 psi at sea level:

(9+14.7-1)/(14.7-1) = 1.66 ratio

Then you can calculate based upon either efficiency, HP or RPMs to figure out what is best.

HP will yeild you CFM which you can then correlate to the turbo map to find the efficiency of the turbo at that CFM and pressure ratio.

By just stating the PSI you want to boost too with out the desired efficiency you are not really stating much as you can have a whole swath of air flow at that psi.
