I tried the mesh. But i used hot glue. It didnt work, it fell out with in a week. On my bumper i dont have much to zip tie too. Post some pics.

Just a warning for ya. I did the same thing before I bought my gunmetal grill, and if you bought your stuff from the homedepot you might really want to spray it with some stuff to keep it from rusting. once it is rusted that is it and it is a PITA to get out. The one I bought said that it could be used for all these outside applications but never said anything about spraying it with anything first.
Just my .02

Hey guys - anyone know if it's possible to get some good grill mesh like the EVO has? I know we can get stuff at home depot and lowes, but that's all mostly flimsy stuff. The grill on the EVO is pretty hard and durable. Has anyone seen this stuff anywhere? There's an RX8 on the cover of Modified magazine that has something close to what I'm looking for.

:dsm: Hey bro, just so you know, you can get the part from Satan and cut it to fit an eclipse but that will set you back about $80-$99. I work for Satan in the parts dept. so I know of people that have done that it seems like everyone wants to do that mod, but heres a tip the quality of the home depot stuff is about the same if you clips them right. I got mine at satan of course I didnt pay for it but if i had to i would have gone with the home depot mod, i dont tell that to my customers because we are in the business of selling parts but that was just a quick tip... Also I know of a guy in DSMtrader.com who says he gets his from and independent custom factory thats basically the same as the stuff you can get from APC . I dont recall his name but i belive he can get the grill for any import so if you are interested let me know and i will try to research it, i think they were going for about $15 or so but its you call...:dsm:

i did a mesh on my front, pics on my page in my sig if you wanna see.

its not like an evo but just to give u an idea

Do a Google search for "expanded metal". Check your phone book, Chris, I think you have a Castle Metals down there- they have a line on all kinds of decorative sheet metal. Other sheet metal shops usually have a catalog of patterns they can order.

I did this using... shoot, something called hardware... damnit, I can't remember the name. It was a big roll of big black plastic mesh, I think 1/2" squares, found in the garden section of my local Home Depot. I think it's supposed to be used to surround trees. It's more flexible than the OEM Evo parts but not too flimsy. I was able to use this by making a frame for it out of stereo backstrapping. I used automotive clips found in the hardware section (in the drawers with all the bolts and stuff)that have holes for screws. Basically I framed the mesh larger than the mouth of my bumper cover, and where the backstrapping overlapped I put the clips. The clips also held the plastic mesh to the frame. Once the frame was set up I trimmed the plastic mesh. I then installed this on the bumper with the bumper off. I used more backstrapping to create little brackets to mount to the metal lip that goes on the under-side of the bumper cover. On the top I, heh, used zip ties to tie it to the metal brackets that are used for the license plate (I just drilled holes in those brackets since there are sections of it unused that have enough extra room for these holes).

So, some crappy pics of this endeavor are in my gallery. The piece itself is crazy ghetto, but it has survived almost 6 months so far without any problems, and looks clean installed :)

After re-reading the above I realize I did a terrible job explaining what I did exactly. Ah well, I didn't really plan the project well to begin with, so the process was messy :)

I'm not really concerned mainly about the price right now. I don't want flexible stuff - I want the same exact type as what's on the EVO - rigid, same mesh design (same size holes). It looks like the grills available on Andysautosport are a tighter mesh design. Don't want that. Everything I've seen at Home Depot comes in rolls. Don't want it to be flexible. I think I'll have to look around at a local sheet metal shop as Defiant suggested. I did look at the EVO grill at the dealership and it's perfect, but for $80, it comes in one size, and it wouldn't cover the 1G opening completely.

If you have enough space you can get really short screws with washers that work great (home depot). Or if theres not enough to screw into get some bondo glass, it has fiberglass and bondo together and when it drys it stays.

you can also use a gasket maker that comes ina tube and create a seal then press the mesh against it.

Alot of people use hot glue as well~ ;)

Ooh, I'm iffy on the hot glue idea.

Two-part epoxy putty works well, rough up the back side of the bumper a bit so it has something to grip. Make sure it's really clean, whatever you use.

I used double bubble on my buddy's. Get past the intoxicating fumes and youre good.

drill small holes and use small wire ties, people probably think you will notice but you really dont

White97rs

i used 1" L brackers on mine, Boletd about 6 of the brackets to the inside of the bumper, trimmed the grill to fit the opening and then zip tied it on

not to thread jack but where can you get some good heavyduty mesh and not that chicken wire looking stuff?

heres apic of the mesh on my old car (RIP), the mesh was easy, used clear tie wraps and used the bolts from the lower bumper to attach it to the bottom
