Megan Racing: Updated AWD Downpipe and Catback! (3in.) Opinions?

There is no story. Read thru his posts, he sure contributes to our lovely forum in a positive way  . Yes there was a crash, but it has nothing at all to do with production of their parts at all. Nothing. That's like Apexi crashing one of their cars and then stopping production of their exhausts...There's no connection. Please, back on topic. :thumb:

So what's the story? Is this piece coming out any time soon or what?

No it isn't. the factory exhaust is aluminized mild steel with a heatshield made of some other material (may be stainless but doubt it). The Apexi N1 exhaust only has a SS muffler, the rest is coated steel.

Stainless will oxidize over time (especially if subjected to high heat/caustic chemicals) but I didn't seen it on my old T304 SS encased Dynomax Ultraflow over the 8years I owned it and many N.E. winters. The welds to the tip and to the zinc-coated mild steel pipe showed a bit of oxidation though :dsm:

Couldn't find a picture of it, will look more later, but here's a quote of a window sticker:

Megan Racing might delay their production of the cat back due to their recent loss. It happened unexpectadly when a Megan Racing yellow 350z lost control and crashed.
Feel free to express your condolences.

We will never forget.
ROFL! I don't know if you meant that to be funny but it damn sure was.

Can they just get the parts out already!?

It's hard for a new company thats growing to release so many new products at once. I'm pushing to get them finished, but it's out of my control right now. I'll post when I hear more...

Can't argue with that ;) though are you sure they're not talking specifically about the Muffler itself  On my 1990, the exhaust piping had rotted pretty badly when I removed it, yet the cat (stainless) and the Muffler (thought was coated steel but may have been stainless  ) looked ok :dsm:

From what I've read, it's not the only time someone has messed up on that same turn. It's a bad turn, and there was also supposedly some dirt. People were having to initiate the drift earlier or later (i forgot which) than they were expecting due to the condition. I believe the track has been closed after this and they are redoing it.

My piping wasn't *too* bad when I removed it, but there was noticeable rust on pretty much all of it, piping, cat, muffler, and all. Everything but the tips, actually :)

Further research has learned me up some more about stainless.

The reason that it's more resistant to rusting is due to a chemical reaction between oxygen and the chromium used in stainless steel. When it begins to corrode, it creates a layer of 'film' over the SS, preventing further corrosion. Once the layer is formed, it slows corrosion to a rate of ~ .002" per year. The technical name for this is chrome oxide, more commonly referred to as ceramic.

Here's another neat thing -- or not so neat, depending on how you look at it; some chemicals have the ability to break down this protective layer: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. What's this mean? Well, for one, don't clean your SS exhaust with fluoride toothpaste. The main point here, though, is that one of these chemicals -- chlorine, to be exact -- is one of the elements contained in Sodium Chloride. This, you should probably know, is also known as salt. And most of our cars see quite a bit of salt for a better portion of the year.

Now, for those who live in non-wintery areas, Chlorides are one of the most common elements in nature, so that doesn't necessarily mean your shiny new SS exhaust won't rust, it just won't happen as quickly as what it does in these northern parts.

thanks for the science lesson mr. wizard! i like to modify dsms.. if i wanted some chemistry lessons id have went to college... :nono:

Hey guys I have the full exhaust from Megan Heres some pics:

I just talked to Jose at Megan Racing and they will be on back order till sometime in early April.
Let me tell you though the quality of these are hands down the best ive seen. And Ive been around dsms since 96. It is all computer mandrel bent and the welds were also computer controlled. The exhaust fitment is perfect. I can not say for the downpipe yet because the motor is out but the catback fit perfect. Also they give you all the gaskets and bolts to install it.
I will be modifying the downpipe slightly by welding on a vband 3in piece on the top for my custom 02 that we will be fabricating. Other than that though this thing is what 99% of you need. :thumb: :thumb: two thumbs up!!!

Heres a list of what megan has specifically for the dsms:
1g catback fwd, awd
2g catback fwd, awd
2g catbypass downpipe fwd, awd
1g downpipe fwd, awd
1g resonator test pipe (needed to complete the full exhaust) fwd, awd
DSM T3 exhaust manifold
95-99 short shifter
95-99 Aluminum Pulley set (I think its a complete set ill have to ask) stock sized

and of course the 95-99 coilovers. I was told by MEgan that they are using the same coilovers for all 95-99 models and that the spring rates are a little weird for the gsx. However I can get custom spring rates 2kg higher or lower than the 14kg fronts and 6kg rears that will match the shock stiffness. I am thinking 8kg for the rear would do better. They can do this for a small fee i am told. If u have them already they will just send u the springs to swap out. We will be trying these out on the car as well.

Yep, I have the coilovers and I'm getting 12kg/8kg instead of the 14kg/6kg that comes with it. Pics look good. Also, looks like they got the exhaust length correct. It wasn't sticking out quite enough when we tested it, so we lengthened it. Looks perfect now. :dsm:

looks really nice.Might have to pick one up if its as good as you say it is. to bad about the shop car though.

That angle is a little too extreme for me...

hey bro i agree about the angle...it is way too extreme... sucks that ive been waiting almost 4 months for this exhaust just to see it is gonna have that angled tip on there like that... i thought that was supposed to be addressed. oh well.. thermal/extreme here i come. cant keep waiting on these pansies... other than the angle the catback looks good....

sorry in my honest opinion, you just cant go wrong with good ol' N1;)

Yeah you can't go wrong with an easily rusted mild steel overpriced piece of garbage that people just seem to buy because everyone else does.
