2G Manual awd tranny splines warn down?

Ok so i bought this tranny used and my tranny guy says that the output shaft for the t case is warn down. Place i bought it from says its still good. I want to know for sure before i have it installed or ill be getting a different one all help is much appreciated

Completely normal. All of mine have looked like that ranging from 60k miles to 180k miles. My tranny guy said the same thing too when I had one rebuilt. Couldn't find a new output shaft anywhere so I settled with what I had. Still works fine to this day.

Really hmm i was wondering i had searched and came up with some saying it was normal and some saying it wasnt i just want to be as certian as i can before i have it installed.

If your output shaft has worn splines, the shaft must be replaced to prevent stripping the splines and the consequential costly failure. Do it while it is out of the car now and save yourself the headache down the road. Trust your mechanic, not the ones that sold it to you. Salvage yards will sell anything. Junk or not. I would return it... Or pay upwards of 200 bucks to replace the shaft. It does look pretty worn to me.

Good splines have a / \ shape. Worn ones have a /\ or /| shape.

There is likely a damaged center differential in the transmission. I would suspect an upper pinion gear shim failed and the upper pinion gear is wearing into the center diff cover.

Otherwise, it was attached to a damaged transfer case.

Not greasing the splines and letting it rub for 20 years tends to wear them out. Mines not quite that worn and I keep expecting the next hard launch to strip the rest of the splines off.

Don't forget to check the coupler side in the transfer case for wear too.
