hey guys im just kinda of confused, are MAF and MAS the same thing? kinda a n00b question but i could never figuer it out

The easiest way to find out is to type "mas maf" into the forums search bar, but I help you out.

Stock DSM has a MAS( mass air sensor) it is placed before the turbo. The fact that the MAS is before the turbo makes it very important that you recirculate your BOV so that you do not run lean, and the ecu gets a proper reading by being able to calculate the air that would have been released into the atmosphere. A 2g mas is a decent upgrade for a stock 1g dsm. It has much less restrictive air flow.

Maf is a air sensor that is place before the throttle body and not before the turbo intake. This allows for reading after the turbo and will allow you to not recirculate your BOV (for the ricers out there psssssssh!). DSMs usually use GM MAFs in the car, they require a translator or with the new ECMlink you can get a harness that allows you to connect a MAF to the ECU using the MAS harness.

Here are some pic to help you out.

1g MAS

2g MAS (that block box with the airfilter)

MAF with a translator MAFT hence the T

so is it possible to put a 2g mas on a 1 g intake before the turbo? or do i need a 2g one

The 2g MAS has a different type of fitting on both ends from a 1g. There are ways to fab an intake pipe for pretty cheap in the tech section to fit. Also know that a 2g intake will cause a/f issues if you don't have a way to tune the car, it reads about 30% less air being pulled in.

The term MAS and MAF can be used interchangably. MAS stands for (Mass Airflow Sensor) MAF stands for (Mass AirFlow) and then you can say sensor after it. Since most people already know it's a sensor they just call it a MAF without an S on the end.

Just like how MAP stands for (Manifold Absolute Pressure) and everyone knows it's a sensor no need for an S.

But, I believe us DSMers started calling them MAS's because being smarter than all the rest of the automotive crowd, We realized that Airflow is one word and therefore should only represent one letter of the acronym. ROFL

If you follow that link and look up MAF and MAS you'll notice that MAF is in there and MAS is not.

There are plenty of write up on how to connect a 1g harness to a 2g pigtail. You can also fine premade harnesses on ebay or on the classified. Its a very good upgrade and there are plenty cars running this mod with substantial horsepower. Its a very easy mod.

Here the link for the write up on VFAQ
