I was torquing my exhaust studs down to 20ft-lbs, 2 of them seemingly came loose and starting actually threading backwards, coming out of the exhaust manifold instead of in.
Does this mean the threads on the head are gone, and if so does anyone think a helicoil would work, im afraid of using it with the heat that would have to endure.

Try tightening them again and see if that works..I have always retightened mine after I got the manifold on..

Loctite would come in handy for the threads that want to back out..But if you don't have a torch, taking them back out might be a PITA..

general consensus that helicoils will work in this setting? My friend used a m12 helicoil on his trans mount and it seems fine.

I install alot of them.. with alum, it is easy, just have a sharp drill bit (new), it will follow the hole just fine.

Oil on the tap will help with smoother cuts.

Just take your time, and do not rush.

Yeah I've had a few different heads throughout the years, the exhaust studs on DSM's crap out all the time. Heilcoil is the proper fix, but if you need to get by you can get slightly longer bolts sometimes to catch the good thread thats a little deeper in, but I'd reccomend setting yourself up with heilcoil bits because unfortunately you'll probably be running into this problem again sometime down the road.

what exactly is a helicoil and where could it get picked up? I have a loose exhaust manifold stud that won't thread anymore. stud fell out the head as I was getting the nut for the stud tight

Be careful which stud you run a heli coil or drill/tap through, one of them has an oil passage behind it and you don't want metal shaving in your oil. :nono:

And if you do tap it on car, no matter how hard you try, if you hit an oil passage, you will inevitably find this in the oil pan.

In my experience, helicoils are a great fix until it starts to see heat. Once it see's heat it seems to become brittle and not hold as well as when you originally put it in. But this really is the only simple fix, if you have to take off the manifold again I would suggest replacing the old helicoil (if not already broke) with a new one when you go to put it back on.

That as also happened to me. The helicoils like to come out when seeing heat. However I think the next time I do it Ill just put in helicoils and some lock-tight. Use red, blue sometimes isnt strong enough because of the heat, and we all know that if you use green, well goodluck getting them out other then drilling.

Another reason they sometimes come out is due to the stud not placed all the way in the thread. Make sure they are in as far as they can go. Using the two nut method works the best.
