Hey guys, I'm new to these cars... I have a friend that is getting a 99 eclipse gs with the 4g64 and a 5 spd from her dad. It's been sitting for over a year and I got it started this weekend. It has a pretty bad tick/knock and iv been reading up on "lifter tick" apparently it's very common. I have some videos and can post them up of the noise and how much the rocker arms move...

First question. How much should (if any) these rocker arms move when no tension is on them? These rock pretty far and I know on hard part rockers like my Cummins they are required to have gap. But with the hydraulic lifters I honestly don't know...

Next question. If it's not just the lifter what else could cause this ticking/knocking? Iv seen timing belt problems or timing jump could cause it... how do I check these things as well?

I'm trying to get this car running for her as cheap as possible cause work is slow. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

This is first start up after a year of sitting...

Mods please delete this and my profile. I didn't have days to read threw and try to navigate this forum. Obviously nobody wants to help...
Thanks

Thank you for your reply. It had a tick before it sat that's y he left it. I did not do an oil change only because I was trying to see if it would even start before I sunk money I don't have into it. Now that I have it started and I already have lifters I can start with the mantenaince portion. I tried to swap lifters Sunday but couldn't get the old ones out... any tips would b great. I kept bending the needles I had. As soon as I get the lifters swapped and the noise quiets to a very minimal tick letting me know it's not a rod I will change oil and filter in it.

Since it has been sitting for a longer period of time, you should also look into a small exhaust leak. The second video sounds like a small exhaust leak but does not sound like lifter tick is your problem here.

Cut open your oil filter and look for any metal shavings, that first video did not sound like a lifter tick.

Also you can remove the rockers with two flat heads. Honestly dude no reason for you to get all worked up and calling this site out for not responding in seconds. You could have easily search through youtube on how to do this. But anyways here you go.

I didn't think about exhaust leak. It sounds like it's coming from the left (front?) Side of the motor under the valve Cover. But could also b echoing...

Danielsl1999, I wasn't expecting within seconds... but at least a day or 2 would have been better like the answer above about exhaust leak could have saved me 50 bucks on lifters if that's it is indeed an exhaust leak. AND this is the 4g64 16v not the 4g63 8v... I already searched YouTube and couldn't find anything.

Sorry, both motors are 16v, except the basic 4G63 was an 8v motor (looks like a 4G37 on a small hit of steroids being bigger) and those only existed in the early 90's Galants and Dodge Colt Vista Wagon that came here from Japan.

Now, the 4G64 is a SOHC 16v motor and that's were it gets a bit complicated with the cam design with one lobe doing a pair of valves together and that spark plug fits in there somehow between two valves.

Good luck - DSM
