Slight lifter tick?

Ok I'm not sure what it is. I know I have an exhaust leak, but this is different. It's not constant. I can only really hear it when I'm slowing down. I'll watch the oil pressure guage just to make sure I have good pressure and the tick will come and go. When I do hear it I'll rev the motor and it won't get louder like a normal tick would. I'm full on oil I've just checked that. I'm not sure what it could be. I don't want to take the valve cover off till I have a new gasket, but if I have too I will.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Pull the valve cover after having the car running until warmed up and see if any of the lifters are easily compressed by pushing on them (make sure the cam lobe isn't pushing on the rocker)

If any of them can be compressed then they are probably bad.

You should pick up a set of 3g lifters.

Ok, thanks I'll do that. I'm going to end up taking it into a shop to do the work for me. Do they need to take the head off to do this? I'm hopeing not. What price am I looking at for them to do the work?

No, head stays on, just the time to put them in with special tools and the 80 plus dollars per hour labor and the price for additional replacement parts...

If it is the lifters themselves that are ticking a bit, add a can of 6cyl Engine Restorer.
It will shut them up in like 5minutes and last awhile too. Sounds ridiculous, I know

It's just weird that it only ticks once and awhile. It's not all the time. I just don't get it.

Wouldn't I use the 4cl engine restore or does it not matter?

You could try lucas oil treatment . it works wonders on old engines . not a permanent fix but its cheaper than a garage and new parts.
