ok i have a 97 tsi fwd and this tick is driving me nuts seems to have gotten worse with the cold weather as well. It will stop afther it has ran for awhile but holy hell does it sound tickey . I am running royal purple 5-w30 with mitsu oil filter . Any thoughts could it be a bad/shot lifter or to thin of oil for the weather? .It is quite loud when cold started driving me nuts:banghead:

Royal purple is good i run 10w 30 I have no lifter problems, if its bad bad try even heavier then 10 w 30, btw does it go away when you get to higher rpms?

haha so your are saying to run 10-w30 then it does go away afther a few mins of warm up about till opt temp somtimes. If its crabby it will do it a little longer but if i kinda hold it at about 1500 rpm it goes away as well when its warming upl. :hmm: thoughts ?

Switching to a thicker viscosity oil can help reduce the noise, but its just a band-aid. The real problem isn't the oil, it's the lifters themselves becoming clogged. You could pull them and clean them like Rad said. Another possible solution would be a Seafoam treatment. Right before you change the oil, pour about 3/4 of the can in the oil. Let the car idle with a good free-rev every now and then. After a few minutes, drain the oil and refill with whatever oil you use.

But even if these methods completely cured the tick, it would eventually return. Like I said, the stock lifters get clogged very easily. So the permanent fix: Revised lifters.

Jafromobile does this on one of his engine blueprinting videos on youtube. You remove them and end up soaking them in kerosene or something similar, then just pretty much putting them upside down and pressing them out repeatedly until you get all the gunk out. But for the trouble it is doing it, I would just spring the $70 and get the 3g revised lifters..

You can also use diesel or kerosene - to remove the gum build up in the lifters.

But, you'll have to inspect the lifters, for the ticking can also damage the tops of the lifters and flatten them where no cleaning will cure the problem.

Replace is the only way along with using too thin of oil (5w30) isn't justice to a 4G63 setup.

Here's some blab on those 3G modified lifters that's been going on a previous thread .... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/maintenance-repairs/397547-modify-stock-lifters-instead-buying-

i have the same problem with my 97 tsi the ticking is not that bad but its noticeable its worse when its warming up or ideling high/reving but sometimes it almost stops. how do you get the lifters out to clean them the easiest way i cant find any videos on it

Even if you bleed them, they are still worn. New lifters are the only cure to cure this blessed tick. Did on on a 1.8L that had No.3 EXH lifter's nose all mangled and dented in. Quieted down that little motor real good that had over 210K miles on it.
