I just wanted to share my experience with marvel mystery oil and lifter tick. My 92 talon tsi had a pretty bad lifter tick im pretty sure they're the original lifters with the tiny oil holes. It would happen on cold starts and would last about half a minute until the ticking would go away. About a month ago i put half a quart of mmo in the oil. I haven't heard the ticking at all in about 2 weeks. It took about 100 miles of driving for it to go away, but now zero ticking. So moral of the story, at least give it a shot before spending the money on the revised lifters. I just made sure to use 10w30 so the oil doesn't get too thin from the MMO.

I would try anything over the revised lifters...the aftermarket ones that everybody buys because OEM ones are $500 a set do not quiet the tick whatsoever, and they conveniently pump all the oil from the pan into your head at sustained high RPM so they make a Kiggly HLA regulator a necessity as well.

Always. Keep. Stock. Lifters.

I’m with the comment above, never ran anything but small hole stock lifters for many reasons. Let them tick, doesn’t hurt anything. Opposed to dumping additives in I would’ve went up to 10w40 or 15w40 unless you live somewhere where it gets cold and you drive it in the winter, 10w30 is what Mitsubishi called for initially. Like mentioned above, I see far too many upgrade to the “revised” lifters without pairing them with a Kiggly HLA regulator just to get rid of a slight tick when the engines cold that hurts absolutely nothing.

You have to wonder why Mitsu redesigned the lifters. Was it because of the noise and people complaining? Noise complaints was a big reason why they redesigned the oil pump gears (straight to helical). I also think lifter tick is exaggerated by undersized oil galleys from the block into the head. I've read that the oil port mod can cure some lifter tick, especially if the head has been milled. 1g lifters are also known for accumulating debris and sludge over time, which is probably why MMO helped in the OP's case.

I personally run a set of 3g lifters. I have the oil port mod and still get some brief lifter tick on a *cold* winter morning start. Prior to my engine rebuild/oil port mod, these 3g lifters ticked much more frequently.

Yeah, Im in Michigan so I figured I would just use 10w30. Im just glad this worked for me and I didn't change the lifters. I never thought about the oil flow issues with the revised lifters. I guess i just never questioned it since its an oem part. I plan in draining the oil and changing it once we get a break in the snow since i heard there could be a lot if carbon in the oil that the mmo broke loose. And the oil has gotten very dark very fast since i added the mmo.
