Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

that is actually a flange for a tial type blow off valve, you can go on ebay an order a simple steel flange

OK. I want to re-use my original 1G BOV, not an aftermarket. Where can I get a flange for it? Can I use cut the flange off the stock piping and weld it onto the SSA pipe in my pic above?

Dredman,

The stock flange is steel and I don't know what your pipes are made from. If they are Aluminum you cannot weld the two together. If it is stainless steel then they will weld together fine. The best way would to be to use 309L welding rods or wire since it is specifically made for carbon to stainless welding. If you don't have that ability, then regular rods or wire will work ok IMO. Won't be as strong, but as long as it is a good weld then you should be fine. It isn't holding much weight so you just need to make sure to get the heat right so the fusion is complete and there won't be any leaks. If you are not familiar with 309L rods then it can be a PITA. The two surfaces have to be PERFECTLY clean or you will get porosity like hell! Good luck.

Ravenous,

I went with the universal kit where I could choose my own pipes, couplers & t bolts. It worked out great. I had to hack 2 pipes and roll the edges myself. I ran a short route and made my own j-pipe also. Here is the link. eBay Motors: Anysize intercooler piping pipe for 2" 2.5" 2.75" 3" (item 190178636130 end time Dec-04-07 07:00:00 PST)

You can pretty much get anything you need and add a few extra pieces for a very reasonable price if you need.

Ya you can jut your flange off if you want or order one. The flange on the piping is steel and welding wont be a problem, wasnt when i had mine done

Ya this thread will never end

My1GLaser and twack, I'm not too sure what material the piping is made from, but it seems much too heavy and hard to be aluminum. The outsides are polished. It's the SSAutochrome/XS Power FMIC, so if anyone else can verify the pipe material on their kit it should be the same, no?
In my pic above, the internal diameter of the opening on the SSA piping for the flange is 2". The outside diameter is 2 1/4". If I cut the BOV flange off the stock piping on the car, would it fit?

Its stainless steel

Take it to Meineke, have them cut off the old flange and weld/modify the new one on.

I'm having my old 1g flange cut off in a couple days to have my HKS flange welded on.

Kawboy is correct its steel i have the kit on right now works great have any more questions just ask

And btw

The 1g kit is supposed to come with the correct 50mm tial knockoff to work on that flange

Per description:

1990-1994 FIRST GENERATION FMIC ECLIPSE TURBO KIT, GST , TALON , LANCER • SUPER FMIC UPGRADE FOR THE DSM 1G ECLIPSE • CORE MEASURING • 25X12X3" THICK ! • SUPER DESIGNED END-TANKS • FLANGE FOR BOV WELDED ALREADY • INCLUDES HIGH END RUBBERS AND T-BOLT CLAMPS • 50MM BOV INCLUDED

^^^ that's what I was thinking :( I sent SSAutochrome an email 5 or 6 days ago, but no response yet. Can anyone who's had any experience dealing with them tell me if I should keep trying them, or not worry and just try to do it on my own.

twack, as the BOV opening on my SSA pipe is 2" internal diameter, won't it be a problem to fit the 1G flange onto it? Isn't the 1G flange designed to go over a much smaller opening, like 1.5"? If so, how would I fit another "reducing adapter" to reduce the diameter of the opening on the already existing adapter on the SSA pipe right now. It's already crowded in the engine bay....

If you see the bov, the flange is just the right size. If the stocker is a tiny bit smaller just bend it in on the tips.

hahaha bet no one thought this kit fit perfectly with a 50trim

Same as you it has the flange for the tial bov, i ddint cut it off, i took it to the welders and they welded it on, and its been great

Cool - that's great news! I'm ordering the 1G BOV flange and gasket from Slowboy Racing as I type this. Thanks for all the help twack!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

After my 1st email to SSAutochrome, I sent another one after my last post above again advising them that the BOV was not included with my kit. The very next working day (Dec 3rd), I got an email from FedEx advising of a shipment notification from SSA, and the package was delivered to me on Dec 5th. On opening, there was (ta-daa!!!) a shiny new BOV (the Tial type) and flange for my 1G kit :)
As such, I now have no regrets at all from ordering this FMIC. Although it took them 2 email and about a week to respond, the rush delivery at their expense shows some level of customer service from them.
One question now - Can anyone using the SSA BOV on their 1G car tell me how it's working for them?

the Tial knockoff seems to be vented to atmosphere. I know there are many problems runing that setup on a stock car, but seeing that SSA is including that BOV with their kit, is it that they assume you are running some kind of aftermarket tuning, or is there a way to hook it up to a stock running car that I don't know about?

If the bov works exactly like the real Tial does (and vents out holes around the side of it), then yes, that would be vented to the atmosphere. The bad thing is is that there is no way of recirculating this bov. And no, the company most likely doesn't assume that you're running a MAF-T, AEM EMS, or speed density setup. If you don't have one of those setups, I would suggest taking it to a welder and having a new flange put on for which ever recirculated bov you choose to run. Otherwise, you car will not run correctly.

The tial knockoff works pretty good for the $150 price difference. Mine wasn't opening right at one point, so I took it apart and cleaned it. I also put a tiny bit of lube on the metal to metal surfaces. Worked fine ever since. And it works surprisingly well since it's vented with the stock mas. I think it has to do with it not being open at idle.

It doesn't vent at idle so all you're gonna experience is the richness between shifts

If you shift fast enough, the bov hardly blows off, and it (the richeness) hardly makes a difference

I have used 2 of these intercooler kits now and im pleased with them both . I had to do some cutting to get the pipes through the body under the maf . TAKE NOTE THESE INTERCOOLERS FIT TIGHT REALLY TIGHT ON AN 1G AUTO... The pipes barely squeeze through buy the tranny . Took some cursing like a sailor and blood but it will go on.:thumb:

I purchased a SSAC 2G kit today from trendyauto on ebay.

it coming from cali , so i should get it quickly.

I havent seen a post on the fitment of it to a 2g AWD Automatic car yet.

and also i havent seen much talk on how to make the kit work with a T25. I plan on doing my own write up or topic on how to make it work with the t25. a local shop told me i could cut a piece of off one of my stock pipes and it would work like that. anyways , if someone knows a link to a thread to clarify that for me that would be great. thanks.

Just to keep everyone who's PM'ed me updated, I have these back in stock :)

Just as before, my kit includes black couplers as well as the missing coupler and two t-bolt clamps the other kits don't include.
