Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

Hey thanks, I didn't even think about this issue coming up for other people with T28/T25 and fmic kits. I should be good to go now.

Edit: nevermind, I went to Central Florida Turbo and their guy who installs/fabs kits on anything with 4 wheels said he can take care of cutting the T28 and rewelding the beaded lip towards the driver. So I'm going to mount the ic myself and have the shop take care of the piping to the inlet side. Not too expensive either considering. He would have done the whole install for 300 but he didn't know I'll have all the pipes and couplers. So I'm looking at $150.

Do I have to trim more on my bumper? The bottom lip is bending down and makes a gap inbetween the lip and intercooler?
Also, everyone that did theirs black, did they just spray paint it?

What are people's thoughts regarding this fmic installed on a 2Ga vs 2Gb, specifically regarding its efficiency? With the 2Ga's front bumper it looks like the top 3" of the fmic does not get direct airflow compared to the 2Gb that has the larger opening. How much does this effect its performance?

I plan to do the 2Gb conversion just for functionality reasons but not until all my performance mods are done.

Ya if you want to you can keep your uicp there might be a little trimming involved in making it work but the pipe they give you is extra long so it will have to be cut down anyhow and if your attached to your uicp now then just keep that one. you wont have to get a bov flange welded on.

Well mine is finally done and I'm not totally happy with it. First I need to get a 2.5" 90* bend because I don't like the 2" pipe that it comes with. This is not a big deal.
What I'm really not happy about is, that I used the stock hole that holds the fog light bracket in, trimmed a LOT off the bumper and now it looks like the intercooler doesn't sit low enough.

pics?

Their shipping was very fast...got to me in 2 business days. A+ for that. However, I'm a little annoyed with what I got. As you can see in the picture, they shorted me 4 clamps, 2 couplers, and the elbow pipe is NOT the same one as seen in their picture. Not only is it a smaller diameter than the other pipes, but it is wayyy too short.

What I got:

My biggest complaint is the elbow which seems the wrong diameter and length. The core looks great though, nice welds. Guess I'll have to have the whole turbo to inlet piping fabbed. I'll be having my T28 hacked so the outlet faces down...can anyone who already installed this on a downfiring turbo tell me the approximate length the pipe is supposed to be from turbo to the core inlet? I won't be mounting it until I have the pipe fabbed so I can't measure. Thank you.

You guys need to read, EVERYONE was missing a coupler and two Tbolts. so don't feel too sad about it.

Also the lower short piping looks like an update from their kits. I say this because I made no use of the 90* small pipe because it made it too long to reach the turbo. Therefore I used a 90* coupler and thew away the 90* small pipe. So it works out better for you to have a small pipe, you will know what I mean when you install the kit.

The kit is under 300dollars, you cant expect to have everything :p

looks like the only problem im going to run into with the piping is where my trans fluid dipstick it.. as i told you earlier today haha

I was going to, but the couplers/clamps are so cheap to get it's probably not worth the trouble.

Uh, I did read. All 1588 posts in fact. I'm missing twice the norm, so I'm informing other prospective buyers about it. And this is in spite of me specifically requesting in writing that they count the couplers and clamps to make sure they are all there. I guess the message wasn't forwarded to the sweatshop slave-driver.

Nobody is missing twice the normal. Do an overview and connect your piping. You only need one set (1coupler, 2tbolts) I just saved you money before you bought two sets.

Again everyone is just missing one coupler and two bolts. The Ebay picture is wrong.

rice over wheat that short elbow pipe is actually more "correct" than that long ass one shown in the picture. There isn't even enough room for an elbow pipe that is that big.

With the J-pipe I am using I can't even use the included short elbow, I am cutting up the stock LICP rubber piping and running that to make the elbow connection.

guys,

I'm installing this Bumper on my 2Ga...

it's starting to look like it's gonna be a tight fit...

I dunno how much butchering i'm gonna have to do ....

anyone have pics of it installed on a 2GA? i have a feeling i might have to cut out the "legs" on the smiley where the fogs used to go...

I think somewhere along the 2gb line they moved the charcoal canister from under the battery tray to the driver side front behind the black cover.

The fuel vapor lines run alongside the bottom of the radiator to the canister.

I was thinking to try to space out the canister a little futher using longer bolts and washers and try to reposition the fuel vapor lines as best I can.

Yeah, just did that, I was wrong. When I laid it all out it made sense. Damn good quality parts for the price. I love cheap imports, trade deficits be damned!

Yeah I noticed that. Now it makes sense the first 20 pages of this thread where people were running into that problem.

I need some advice here about whether I'm getting a reasonable deal or getting ripped off.

I'm going to mount the core myself so I can keep driving around on my smic. Then I was going to go to a tuner shop nearby and have them cut my T28 to downfiring, then the jpipe-to-inlet pipe needs cut/weld because it's too long. Then I'm going to have them assemble all my piping and test it since my car will be there anyway. They want $500 for the total job. That seems pricey but I don't know what such labor usually costs.

I need to know if this is reasonable in light of the following facts:

1. I'm in town only for 18 more months so I don't have a garage. I can rent a garage for my apt ($120/mo). I am doing so to mount my core.
2. I have minimal tools. I know nothing about welding. I'll be borrowing a dremel and sawzall from a friend to do my core. Other than that, I have no tools other than basics and power drill and would have to buy any extras that I need -- and remember I don't have a garage to store them.
3. I *must* be able to drive my car every day, no exceptions because of work and grad school. Otherwise I'd have to rent a car for a week ($150). So I cannot remove my turbo from the car to take it somewhere.
4. Because of the above conditions I must be able to cut the turbo, weld the pipes, and put everything together in drivable condition within 8 hours max.

So...given my circumstances, is it worth $500 to get it professionally done, is it a reasonable price, and if not what other option do I have? I think that due to renting a garage, buying tools, and need for transportation, I don't have much choice here.

(Unless someone local wants to cut my turbo and cut/weld a pipe for me for $200). :D

EDIT: Nm, I answered my own question. $500 is a damn rip off!! After all, mounting the core is the hard part with all the drilling, cutting, and trimming. These guys want $500 to cut my turbo, weld a pipe ($40 at the muffler shop across the street!), and t-bolt my pipes together?! Screw that, I'm going to mount the core AND put on the hot side pipe myself cut to the correct length so all I have to have them do is cut the turbo for me. Then I'll push the car outside and put it together myself! Damn I must have "sucker" written on my forehead (that and I can't understand spanish when they price my quote).

im having an issue here.. 14b turbo.. Jpipe.. where that 90* bent pipe goes to the hot side of the IC ... theres no way it fits in there with the wastegate and a Motor mount(trans) right there. i'll post a pic in a min.
